The Managing Director of Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited, MEDL, Dr Ernest Mupwaya, has explained that 24-hour power supply is possible in Enugu State.

Mupwaya disclosed this when he hosted the traditional ruler of Ikenga Umulumgbe Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Igwe Christian Obinna Ozor, who paid him a courtesy call on Wednesday.

This comes as Mupwaya made a case for electricity customers and stakeholders relationships to boost power supply.

He said: “We emphasise the need for collaboration with customers and critical stakeholders to achieve operational excellence.

“Enugu State will witness a transformation in power supply. We equally appeal for continued collaboration with your community in ensuring that electricity assets within their environment are adequately protected against vandals.

“I want to reiterate the company’s commitment to delivering reliable power and improved service delivery across Enugu State.”

On his part, Igwe Ozor expressed the willingness of his community to provide an office space for MEDL to enable his kinsmen to easily access the office and conveniently pay their electricity bills, as well as carry out any transaction they may have with the company without necessarily having to travel long distances.

The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, in partnership with the Association of Pharmaceutical Chemists, has destroyed expired drugs valued at over N800,000 in Gumel Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

The chairman of Gumel Local Government Council, Alhaji Lawan Ya’u Abdullahi, disclosed this during the event in Gumel.

He reaffirmed the council’s commitment to safeguarding public health, emphasising the importance of collective efforts in building a healthy society.

Speaking earlier, the chairman of the local chapter of the Association of Pharmaceutical Chemists, Malam Bashari Dahiru Gagarawa, expressed gratitude to both the state and local governments for their continued support in improving healthcare delivery.

Kwara warns public against avian influenza

The Kwara State Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has warned the public about the outbreak of a highly pathogenic avian influenza, HPAI, recently reported in Kano State.

“While there are no confirmed cases in Kwara State, proactive measures are necessary to prevent its occurrence and safeguard our poultry industry and public health,” a statement in Ilorin by the ministry’s spokesperson Omotola Ashaolu, stated.

According to the statement: “HPAI, a highly contagious disease, causes severe poultry mortality and poses a potential risk to human health.

“To ensure Kwara State remains free from this threat, all residents, particularly poultry farmers, bird handlers, and agricultural stakeholders, are urged to adopt among other preventive measures,

strengthen biosecurity measures, and restrict access to poultry farms.”

Other measures include disinfecting equipment, tools, and facilities regularly, preventing wild birds from interacting with domestic poultry and prompt reporting of suspected cases.

The ministry also advised the public to watch for sudden bird deaths, respiratory distress, or a significant drop in egg production and report any unusual cases to the veterinary services department or relevant authorities for investigation and containment.

The statement also urged the use of protective equipment by ensuring proper use of gloves, masks, and other protective gears when handling poultry as well as avoiding direct contact with sick or dead birds.

The ministry further urged strict compliance with the guidelines to protect Kwara state from the threat adding that “by working together, we can prevent an outbreak and ensure a healthy and secure future for our communities.”
