Kwara: Three buildings sealed over open defecation in Ilorin

Three buildings have been sealed over open defecation in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

The sealed buildings are located in the Adualere area, Ilorin East Local Government Area of the state.

The team leader of the Environmental Health Officers in the Ministry of Environment, during an enforcement operation in the area, disclosed that the buildings were sealed after interrogation and investigation carried out by the team.

DAILY POST reports that aside from the sealed buildings, residents of another area along Obbo-Ayegunle road in the state capital were directed to clear the drainage filled with refuse to allow the free flow of water.

Similarly, a poultry farm at Irewolede area of Ilorin metropolis, found guilty of violating the environmental law, was fined N50,000 and directed to procure a waste bin, which was purchased immediately after the enforcement.

Speaking while receiving the report of the enforcement exercise, the Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, warned residents in the state against indiscriminate dumping of waste in drainages, as facilities have been provided by the government for the effective evacuation of waste to protect the health of the citizens and prevent the outbreak of preventable diseases.

She noted that Kwara State has been rated high among its peers for its untiring efforts at eradicating indiscriminate dumping of refuse and sustaining a “Cleaner Kwara,” where a hygienic environment for residents is prioritized to create an enabling environment for social and economic activities.

Hajia Buge disclosed that some environmental violators who were apprehended have been charged, with fines levied against them in accordance with the extant environmental laws.

She warned residents to desist from violating environmental laws or be ready to face the wrath of the law, while appreciating Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his unwavering support to the ministry in sustaining the initiative of a clean and safe Kwara.

The commissioner commended the environmental health officers for their commitment and dedication, appealing to residents to join hands with the initiative of the state government in its efforts at sustaining a safe, clean, and hygienic Kwara State.

Tinubu hails governors for backing tax reform bills

President Bola Tinubu has expressed his gratitude to the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) for their unanimous endorsement of the four Tax Reform Bills currently being reviewed by the National Assembly.

In a statement issued on his behalf by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, on Friday, President Tinubu praised the governors for their exemplary leadership and their role in fostering unity across the nation.

He highlighted their efforts in overcoming regional, ethnic, and political differences to drive Nigeria’s progress.

“Thursday’s productive consultation between the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and the Presidential Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy is a notable example of collaboration between the Federal and State governments,” the statement read.

The President extended special praise to the NGF Chairman, Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, for his effective leadership in rallying support among his fellow governors for the tax reform bills, which are aimed at revitalizing the national economy and improving Nigeria’s investment climate.

He also acknowledged the contributions of the Progressive Governors Forum, the Northern Governors Forum, and other groups whose cooperation helped resolve the controversies surrounding the bills.

President Tinubu reiterated that the primary goal of the Tax Reform Bills is to serve the nation’s poor and promote national interests by enhancing Nigeria’s economic competitiveness and attracting both local and foreign investments. He emphasized the importance of updating the country’s outdated tax laws to achieve these objectives.

The President also commended the dialogue between the NGF and the Presidential Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy Reform, stressing that it exemplified the value of constructive discussions in addressing differing viewpoints.

He reaffirmed his commitment to working with the governors to foster economic growth, national unity, peace, and stability, while urging other stakeholders with ideas to participate in the ongoing legislative process at the National Assembly.

Finally, President Tinubu called on the National Assembly to expedite the passage of these critical bills, enabling the country to quickly realize the benefits of the proposed reforms.

The Abia State Government has launched war against corruption in the state’s civil service, urging civil servants and stakeholders to join forces in the fight.

In his inaugural meeting with Permanent Secretaries, in his office, Abia State Head of Service, Mr Benson Ojeikere condemned corruption in all its forms, stating that it has no place in the civil service and so must be eliminated.

“Corruption is a cankerworm that undermines the integrity of our institutions, erodes public trust, and hinders our ability to deliver quality services to the people.”

The HoS, who called on Permanent Secretaries and Heads of other agencies to ensure accountability and transparency in government operations, also enjoined them to closely monitor the activities of their staff as they would be held responsible for any of their corrupt actions.

Ojeikere stressed the need for the workers to rebuild their image following the negative perception of the public towards the civil servants.

The Head of Service, who observed with regret that the actions of some civil/public servants have tarnished the reputation of the service, charged workers to be committed to restoring the dignity of the Service by blatantly refusing undue influence and upholding honesty and integrity in and outside the service.

Mr Ojeikere requested Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, MDAs, to embark on in-house trainings for their staff aimed at educating them on Public Service Rules and financial regulations, assuring the readiness of the government to train and retrain the workforce for excellent performance.

Members of the NNPP Kwankwasiyya Media Forum have submitted a complaint to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Kano State Anti-Corruption and Public Complaints Commission, accusing some state government officials and the head of the organization of injustice in the distribution of funds provided by the Kano governor for the members.

In a letter signed by Muji Sigan Jingau, Labaran Bage, Zaharadden Kabara, Alhaji Isa Abdullahi, and Rabi’u Eme Yakasai, the group called on the two authorities to investigate the alleged mismanagement of N30 million provided by the Kano governor to support the members of the NNPP Kwankwasiyya Media Forum.

“We heard Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano state on January 5, 2024, at the Coronation Hall in the Kano Government House stated that he had given N30 million to support the members of the NNPP Kwankwasiyya Media Forum to alleviate their suffering,” the letter reads.

“However, up to this moment, not even a single kobo of the funds has been deposited into the organization’s account, and four individuals—Alhajiji Nagoda (SS Media), Samaila Murtala Zawa’i (SSA Media), the leader of the group Nura Bakwankwashe, and the group’s secretary Ali Gyara Hausawa—are accused of distributing the funds and motorcycles to those they favored, without fairness.”

In the letter dated January 16, 2024, the complainants requested that the authorities investigate the matter to ensure fairness for everyone.
