Accident victim remembrance top priority for road safety officers – FRSC
The Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, has stated that remembrance of victims of road traffic accidents is a top priority in 2024.
The FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed made this known as the road traffic watchdog marks the 2024 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Crash Victims in Osun State.
Mohammed represented by the Osun Sector Commander, Sokunbi Adeyemi in a press briefing to commemorate the event, said the FRSC aimed to change the attitudes of drivers.
He also said the FRSC aims to use the week not to only act as a watchdog but also to care for the accident victims.
He said, “The theme for this year’s World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Crash Victims is ‘Tuat Day’. The theme was carefully crafted to tell the stories of ‘That Day’ when traffic collisions stopped or changed the course of the victim’s lives forever.
“Each victim has his or her own story of ‘That Day’, which their relatives, friends and acquaintances Carey in their memory forever.
“Therefore, in World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims 2024, we remember the stories of ‘That Day’”.
Sokunbi stated that the objectives of the 2024 event included: “Remember all people killed and seriously injured on the roads, acknowledge all people killed and seriously injured on the roads, drawing attention to the generally trivial legal response to culpable road deaths.
“Advocate for better support for road traffic victims and victim families and promotion of evidence-based actions to prevent and eventually stop further road traffic deaths and injuries.”
Sokunbi also revealed that the Sector Command will be visiting the Osun State University Teaching Hospital, UTH, through the Road Safety Officers Wives Association to commemorate the week.
The aim of the visit he said, “is to support accident victims and their families.”
“We are taking advocacy and gospel of road safety to places of worship. We started on Sunday at the Living Faith Church and will on Friday be at the Central Mosque in Abere.”
Sokunbi also called on motorists to embark on safe driving practices.
“We aim to take the attention off drivers and approach commuters, and passengers and encourage them to speak up.
“They have to know that they have the right to caution drivers against rough driving.”
The Osun FRSC boss called for a partnership with the media as a critical partner in driving home the need for safety on Nigerian roads.
