Russia-Ukraine War affecting Nigeria – VP Shettima
Vice President Kashim Shettima has decried the continuation of the war between Russia and Ukraine, saying it is hurting the Nigerian economy.
He, however, expressed optimism that the worst-case scenario is over, as the economy is steadily picking up and on the path to growth.
The VP, while wishing Nigerians the best for the year 2025, said talks are ongoing with the National Assembly to birth policies that will help overcome emerging challenges.
Shettima stated this on Wednesday in Lagos when he visited the President, Bola Tinubu.
According to the VP: “I’m highly optimistic about tomorrow. I believe we have turned the corner and, Insha’Allah, we shall have very robust economic activities in the new year. I believe Nigerians will prosper.
“The economy has started picking up, and in the coming weeks and months, Nigerians will start smiling for the better.
“We are working assiduously with the National Assembly to come up with robust solutions to our national challenges. There is no nation that is immune to the economic headwinds across the world.
“The crisis in Ukraine and so many other global trends are affecting us adversely because we are part of the global community. But I want to assure Nigerians that the economy is turning the corner. By the grace of God, we have crossed the Rubicon, and we are on a path to sustained growth. We wish Nigerians well.”

Vice Chancellor of the Kwara State University, KWASU, Malete, Professor Shaykh Luqman Jimoh, has frowned at the negative conduct of some students of the institution on videos which have gone viral on the social media.
According to the VC, the students wore the university’s matriculation gowns depicting themselves as unworthy to be students of a higher institution.
“The students in the videos have been identified and would be made to face disciplinary actions to caution them and others from trivializing what should be treated with honour,” he vowed in a letter to students of the institution on Monday.
“As a university, we are committed to upholding the excellence with which the institution was founded. We will resist any attempt to trivialize the hard work of many years by anyone from any quarters.
Asserting the need to protect the name and integrity of Kwara State University, Professor Shaykh described the videos as “a disservice to all the hard work your lecturers have put in to groom you to be worthy individuals who will command respect anywhere in the world.
” It is a ridicule of the image and integrity of the processes of the institution, which are founded on principles of excellence. KWASU is yours! You will, like the thousands who have graduated from Kwara State University, hold her certificate, go around the world with it, and do great things. The integrity of Kwara State University is ours to protect.
“I must reiterate that KWASU belongs to you, KWASU belongs to me, KWASU belongs to all of us. We must protect her name and image. I urge you all, my dear students, to collectively resist any motivation to cast your institution in any negative light.
“There are thousands of KWASU graduates spread all around the world doing great feats in different areas. Soon, you all too will go into the world holding the KWASU certificate, and I know you would be proud to say you hold a degree from Kwara State University as your predecessors have shown the world that the KWASU graduate is an excellent and formidable individual.
“I, once again, urge you to be law-abiding and focus on being the best you can be. On our part, we will spare nothing to ensure you become the best version that you can be,” the VC pleaded.
