In a significant development aimed at improving the governance and operations of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), the Government of Ghana, has appointed Sammy Gyamfi, Esq. as the acting Managing Director.
Mr Gyamfi, a seasoned legal expert with extensive experience in the minerals sector, succeeds Nana Akwasi Awuah and has vowed to lead the company with a focus on transparency, stakeholder collaboration, and equitable distribution of Ghana’s mineral wealth.
During his formal introduction to PMMC staff today, January 20, Mr Gyamfi outlined his vision, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and collaboration in fulfilling the company’s mandate.
“PMMC’s role as the custodian of Ghana’s precious mineral resources is of paramount importance, and I am committed to ensuring that we fulfill this responsibility in a manner that benefits all Ghanaians,” Gyamfi stated. “This will require strengthening our partnerships with local communities, mining companies, and regulatory bodies while enhancing governance and transparency across our operations.”
A Strategic Transition at a Pivotal Time
The leadership change at PMMC, comes as Ghana faces growing challenges in resource governance and strives to ensure that the benefits of its mineral wealth are shared equitably.
Mr Gyamfi’s appointment underscores the government’s focus on professionalizing state-owned enterprises as part of its sustainable development agenda.
Outgoing Managing Director Nana Akwasi Awuah, praised the PMMC team for their accomplishments, citing progress in financial management, operational efficiency, and upholding the company’s core mission.
“We have achieved great success thanks to the hard work and dedication of our team. I am confident that with Sammy Gyamfi at the helm, PMMC will continue to thrive and reach new heights,” Awuah said.

Mr Gyamfi, has pledged to uphold PMMC’s core values and broaden its mandate, which includes the effective regulation and marketing of Ghana’s precious minerals. His key priorities include:
- Community Engagement: Enhancing collaboration with local communities to ensure fair distribution of mineral wealth.
- Establishment of the GoldBod: Overseeing the creation of the Ghana Gold Board, a new entity dedicated to gold trading.
- Institutional Reforms: Strengthening governance frameworks to align PMMC operations with national policies for the extractive industry.
“Collaboration and open communication will be at the heart of my approach,” Gyamfi said. “We cannot achieve our objectives in isolation, and I am committed to fostering an environment of mutual understanding and shared purpose with the people impacted by mining operations.”

PMMC employees and stakeholders, have expressed confidence in the new leadership. Mrs. Joycelyn Mends-Ainoo, Director of Human Resources and Administration, emphasized the importance of maintaining a seamless leadership transition.
