The Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Wamkele Mene, on Friday, January 17, 2025, paid a courtesy call on former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia at his private residence in Accra.
The visit, Wamkele Mene stated, was to express his heartfelt appreciation to Dr Bawumia for the unwavering support he extended to the AfCFTA Secretariat during his tenure as Vice President of Ghana.
“Your Excellency, I am here today to express my sincere gratitude for the support you extended to the AfCFTA Secretariat during your tenure as the Vice President of the Republic,” Wamkele Mene remarked during their interaction.
Their discussions, also covered key areas, including the AfCFTA Digital Trade Protocol, with a focus on Cross-Border Digital Payments—an initiative pivotal to advancing Africa’s trade integration agenda.
The Secretary-General also lauded Dr Bawumia for his statesmanship, following the December 2024 presidential elections. He commended him for conceding defeat within 24 hours of the polls, even before the Electoral Commission’s official declaration.
“Ghana’s democratic credentials were further strengthened when you conceded defeat less than 24 hours after the presidential elections. You have indeed shown that you love your country and its people,” Mene said.
In concluding, the AfCFTA Secretary-General, encouraged Dr Bawumia to continue contributing to Ghana’s progress and prosperity, noting his significant role in shaping the country’s economic landscape.
