Akwa Ibom Assembly clears 20 commissioner, special adviser nominees
The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has confirmed 20 out of 27 Commissioners and Special Adviser nominees sent to it by Governor Umo Eno.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Udeme Otong, while confirming the nominees during Tuesday’s plenary said they had earlier been screened by the House Committee on Judiciary, Justice, Human Rights and Public Petitions.
He said the remaining seven nominees would be screened and confirmed in next plenary on February 20.
He tasked the confirmed nominees on adding value to the state executive council and bringing more dividends of democracy to Akwa Ibom people.
He listed the confirmed nominees to include; Mr Aniekan Umanah, Dr Henry Archibong, Mr Nsikak Ekong, Mrs Alice Ekpenyong , Mr Frank Archibong, Capt. Iniobong Ekong (rtd), Mr Bob Emem, Comrade Ini Ememobong, Dr Offiong Offor and Mr Uko Essien Udom.
Others are; Dr Nsikak Nkan, Mrs Emem Ibanga, Mr Anthony Luke, Mr Iniobong Robson, Prof. Eno Ibanga, Dr Emmanuel Ekem, Mrs Inibehe Etukudo, Dr Frank Ekpenyong, Dr Ekanem Ekerete and Dr Ubong Inyang respectively.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Committee, Mr Aniefiok Attah, had, while submitting his report, described the nominees as men and women of proven integrity, who have been found qualified to serve in the State Executive Council.
He said the committee did not receive any adverse petition against any of them.

Hundreds of students from the University of Ibadan in Oyo State have staged a peaceful protest against the 82-day power outage at the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan.
DAILY POST reports that UCH is the teaching hospital where medical students from UI are trained.
Our correspondent learned that UCH has been experiencing a power outage for the past year due to debts owed to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, IBEDC.
IBEDC cut off the power supply to the hospital in March 2024 due to unpaid electricity bills.
The electricity distribution company also disconnected the hospital’s power supply in November 2023 for the same reason.
Our correspondent learned that the power supply has still not been restored.
DAILY POST reports that students from the University of Ibadan staged a peaceful protest early Wednesday morning to express their dissatisfaction with the situation at the hospital.
Our correspondent, who is monitoring the procession, reports that the students were led by the President of the Students’ Union, SU, Bolaji Aweda.
Aweda, speaking with DAILY POST, stated that students of the institution have been directly affected.
“We are protesting against what is happening. And, of course, our students are affected.
“For 82 days, there has been no light at UCH, and this is due to the inability of UCH to pay its electricity bill to IBEDC.
“IBEDC has demanded that UCH settle its debt before they will restore power,” he said.
