Bukola Saraki condoles family of Kwara man who died in police detention
Former President of the Senate, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has described as unfortunate, the death of Jimoh AbdulQodir Tunji, in the custody of the Nigeria Police command, Ilorin Kwara State.
He commended the swift intervention of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who visited the family of the deceased and urged them to ensure proper investigation as well as prosecution of anyone found culpable in the tragic incident.
The former Senate President made the call when a delegation visited the family of the deceased on his behalf on Monday at Erubu community, Balogun Fulani area of Ilorin metropolis.
The delegation, led by Mall. Otukoko Olayinka Ibrahim, also included Taiye Alaya, PDP House of Assembly candidate in the 2023 elections, Abdulganiyu Abdulqadir, Press Officer on Local Matters to Abubakar Bukola Saraki and Mufutau Aromaradu, Co-ordinator, 2024 PDP councillorship candidates forum.
The late Jimoh Abdulquadir Tunji died in a police cell in controversial circumstances after he was arrested by policemen over a ₦220,000 debt he owed a customer.
Tunji was arrested on Friday, December 20, 2024, by policemen, including the brother of his creditor, after a complaint was filed over the unpaid debt.
Speaking on behalf of Saraki at the residence of the deceased, Otukoko, described the incident as disturbing and commended the IGP for being proactive, even as he urged the police chief to ensure that the case was not swept under the carpet.
While praying for the soul of the deceased, Saraki sympathized with the family and prayed to God to grant the parents the fortitude to bear the painful loss.
DAILY POST recalls that the IGP on Sunday visited the family of the deceased in Ilorin, where he directed the police force special investigation bureau to take over the investigation of the incident, assuring of unbiased outcome.
He also urged the affected community members to allow the law to take its course.
