Tanker explosion: Abiodun commiserates with Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago
Ogun State governor and chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, Dapo Abiodun, has sympathised with the Niger State governor, Mohammed Bago, over the tanker explosion that occurred along the Dikko-Maje route in Suleja.
DAILY POST reported that the explosion claimed over 77 lives and injured 25 others.
Governor Abiodun, in a statement issued on behalf of the forum on Sunday, described the incident as a devastating tragedy.
Maintaining that the southern states’ governments and citizens were deeply troubled by the tragedy, Abiodun expressed sympathy to Mohammed Bago and his cabinet, as well as the state’s citizens, urging them not to let this incredibly tragic event depress them.
In addition to expressing hope that the injured would heal quickly and be back on their feet as soon as possible, Abiodun prayed for the souls of the other fire victims.
Abiodun said: “To say that we in the Southern Governors’ Forum are terribly shocked by this devastating tragedy, in which as many as 77 people lost their lives and no less than 25 others were grievously injured, would be an understatement.
“This is a soul-crushing event that has befallen Niger State, and we pray that Almighty Allah will comfort the families who lost their loved ones in the incident.
“We also hope that the security agencies will intensify efforts and enforce the directives given by His Excellency, Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, to ensure strict enforcement of traffic rules in the state, especially given that this was an entirely avoidable tragedy.
“It is also important to warn Nigerians to desist from the practice of scooping fuel from fallen tankers, as most of the victims of this tragedy were people who ran to the scene of the accident to scoop fuel.”
Abiodun urged the Federal Government to liaise with the Niger State Government and provide any support the state may need at this time, while also urging state and federal authorities to step up their efforts in handling the aftermath of the tragedy.

Sowore breaks silence after attack by suspected thugs in Lagos
Human rights activist and convener of #RevolutionNow Movement, Omoyele Sowore has confirmed an attack on himself and his crew members at the Lagos City Marathon.
Emerging reports earlier suggested that the former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, was brutally attacked by political thugs.
In a live Facebook video monitored by our correspondent, the thugs could be seen physically assaulting Sowore, his crew members and some persons believed to be journalists.
Confirming the attack, Sowore in a post on his official Facebook page said he is safe and unharmed.
According to him, the management of the facility accused them of unlawfully occupying the “VVIP space post-event”.
He wrote, “I am safe and unharmed in Lagos. Yes, some rogue elements launched an attack on us after completing the Lagos Marathon today, claiming that we unlawfully occupied the “VVIP” space post-event. They mobilized thugs to assault us”.
