The Federal High Court in Abuja has approved a lawsuit seeking to compel the Federal Government to investigate allegations linking the Minister of State for Defence, Alhaji Bello Matawalle, to banditry in Zamfara State.

The suit, brought by human rights activist Abubakar Dahiru, aims to probe Matawalle’s alleged involvement in the operations of bandits during his tenure as governor.

The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1434/2024, lists President Bola Tinubu, the Attorney General of the Federation, and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd defendants, respectively.

Dahiru, represented by his lawyer Ojonimi Apeh, is asking the court to declare that President Tinubu must direct the IGP to investigate the activities of bandits and kidnappers in Zamfara State, with a specific focus on allegations surrounding Matawalle’s role in the crisis.

The plaintiff claims that during Matawalle’s time as governor (2019–2023), armed banditry escalated to unprecedented levels, leaving thousands of citizens in Zamfara State displaced, orphaned, or widowed due to the violence.

Dahiru pointed to interviews and articles accusing Matawalle of supporting banditry, including claims that he provided vehicles to bandits, sabotaged law enforcement efforts, and granted amnesty to terrorists.

Dahiru contends that despite these serious allegations, the government has made no attempt to investigate Matawalle, while banditry continues to plague Zamfara State.

Let’s support one another – CAN reacts to food stampede deaths

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has said it is disturbed by the stampede at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama on Saturday morning.

DAILY POST reports that at least ten people, including children, lost their lives in a stampede which occurred during a palliatives sharing event organized by the church.

According to the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Police Command, about ten dead bodies were recovered after the incident. Several persons were also hospitalized.

Also, not less than 20 residents of the Okija community in Anambra State died in a stampede that occurred during an event organized for the distribution of rice.

Reacting particularly to the Abuja incident, CAN said the tragedy is not just statistics but represents real families who are hurting.

A statement signed by Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN President, noted that each person lost in the incident was someone’s beloved family member.

“We wish to express our heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Church and to the families affected by this terrible incident. We stand together with you in this time of sadness and prayer.

“Many people arrived early, hoping to receive palliatives that would help them during tough times. What was meant to be a day of support turned into a disaster, leaving a heavy impact on all of us and reminding us how fragile life can be.

“This incident is part of a troubling pattern, as Nigeria has experienced two other tragic stampedes this month. On December 18, during a Christmas funfair at a school in Ibadan, a stampede resulted in the deaths of 35 children, with six others critically injured.

“Just a few days later, another stampede occurred during a rice distribution event at a centre in Anambra State. Reports indicate that at least 22 people lost their lives, and 32 others were injured.

“These heartbreaking incidents highlight the challenges of managing large crowds during charitable events.

“In the face of these tragedies, we recognise the importance of coming together to support those who are grieving. It is crucial that we listen to one another, share our feelings, and offer help in any way we can. This is a time for compassion and understanding as we help one another heal.

“As we reflect on these devastating events, we invite all Nigerians to come together with kindness and understanding. Let us support one another and work towards creating a place where everyone feels safe and valued. The concern shown in response to this incident highlights our shared humanity.

“Together, we can honour the memory of those we have lost by committing to a future filled with hope, where every life matters, and where we can gather in safety and peace, sharing in the abundance of food and support that we can provide for one another as a nation.

“May those who have passed find eternal rest, and may God comfort all who are grieving.”
