Varsity students want lawmakers to emphasise on education
Higher school students in Cross River State have appealed to their representatives in both the state and federal legislative chambers to prioritise education in their constituency empowerment programs.
Jenifer Ntui of the University of Calabar spoke on behalf of 60 students from communities in the central district of Cross River State, who enjoyed free transportation courtesy of Mr. Kingsley Ntui Isong, a member of the Cross River State House of Assembly, back to Calabar after the holidays.
She said that instead of Nigerian lawmakers spending money on bicycles, wrappers, indomie, and other palliatives or empowerment items, they should focus on awarding scholarships to deserving constituents.
The students expressed their happiness for the support they received from the lawmaker, which enabled them to return to school, urging others to similarly support schools and students.
“The free transportation was a generous act and a big relief to us. You know that transport fares by bus from Etung LGA are now over N25,000, compared to about N8,000 before.
“We’re free to use the money we saved to defray other charges at school. We are grateful,” she said.
Similarly, Anthony Bissong, chairman of the Youth Progressive Party, YPP, called for educational interventions by lawmakers in the state.
He said doing so could help mitigate the impact of rising transportation costs and general inflation.
