The Port Harcourt refinery is expected to churn out its first volume of refined products today after a period of prolonged delay and missed deadlines.
The older plant of the two facilities located within the same precincts has a capacity of 60,000 barrels per day and has for years been undergoing rehabilitation.
It was learnt that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) team is already at the site of the plant to officially commission it.
The rehabilitation process began in 2021 after the federal government secured a $1.5 billion contract to rehabilitate the facility.
However, it’s unclear how many litres of petrol the refinery will roll out today, as the NNPC had yet to make the figure public at the time of filing this report this morning.
The two plants located in Eleme in Port Harcourt, has two operational units established in 1965 and 1989, with a combined installed capacity of 210,000 bpd.
Aside the 60, 000 bpd expected to begin operation today, the relatively newer plant has a 150,000 bpd capacity.
Details later…
