Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has charged the new General Officer Commanding 82 Division to intensify efforts to end the sit-at-home orders often declared by non-state actors in the South-East region on Mondays.

Nwifuru also advised security agencies to introduce a reward system that would boost the morale of officers and personnel in the agencies.

In a statement made available to journalists by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Dr Monday Uzor, at the weekend, Nwifuru made the call when the new General Officer Commanding 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Enugu, Major-General Oluyemi Olatoye, paid him a courtesy call at his office in Government House Centenary City, Abakaliki.

“I am very much sure you are conversant with the South-East geopolitical environment.

“God has been with us, together with the good military officers deployed to our state. I want to assure you of our continued support, and I am confident in the calibre of men serving here in this state. We have been showing good support for the dedicated officers by giving cash and even car gifts to some of them,” Governor Nwifuru said.

Speaking earlier, Major-General Olatoye commended Governor Nwifuru for his support to the military and assured him that he would collaborate with the state to maintain law and order.

“I assumed command as the General Officer Commanding 82 Division on 27 January 2025. The purpose of the visit is to enhance my knowledge of the operating environment and the sectors, their challenges, and the future of the command. It will also enhance inter-agency and inter-service collaboration.

“I want to thank you for ensuring that all the agencies are well marshalled for better outcomes. I was informed of the cash rewards given to some of our men who performed excellently.

“I appreciate the honour and respect you have for the military,” Olatoye said.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has denied selecting examination towns for candidates taking the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, or the Optional Mock examination.

JAMB spokesman, Fabian Benjamin, stated this in a statement on Sunday, saying the clarification became necessary as 90 percent of the available spaces for the optional mock exercise across the country have been filled, leaving only a few states with available slots.

According to him, JAMB has observed unusual preferences among candidates regarding their choice of examination towns, likely in an effort to participate in the optional mock examination.

He added that the notice is aimed at advising candidates against desperately selecting examination towns, only to later accuse the Board of assigning them to examination towns that are far from their residences, towns, or states.

Benjamin further stated that the Board does not want to be overstressed, saying the mock examination was only meant to give deserving candidates the opportunity to experience the CBT environment and enable the Board to test its facilities.

The JAMB image maker urged candidates to choose their examination towns consciously with travel logistics and convenience in mind, ensuring a smoother experience on examination day.

“The only states with remaining slots for the optional mock examination are Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Plateau, Sokoto, Taraba, and Yobe. Candidates interested in taking the mock examination in these states are encouraged to select their examination towns accordingly.

“While candidates have the right to choose their preferred examination town, JAMB urges them to consider the implications of their choices. Some candidates may select towns that are quite distant, potentially outside their home state. The Board should not be held responsible for such decisions.
The Board allocates Mock examination spaces for candidates to select based on the availability of Mock examination centres, and once a town’s capacity is reached, it will no longer be available for selection,” he stated.
