Enugu community cries out to Gov Mbah as erosion cuts off only access road
The people of Agu Umabor community, in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State have sent a Save Our Soul message to Governor Peter Mbah.
This is following the devastating gully erosion which has cut off the community from the remaining parts of the state.
In a statement made available to journalists on Monday, signed by Abonyi Gilbert Emeka and Ogbu Christopher, the President and the Secretary General, respectively, of Agu Umabor Elites Group, they begged the governor to urgently intervene and save them from the harrowing experience of passing through the death trap.
“We wish to draw the attention of the Enugu State government and the general public to the deplorable condition of Agu Umabor-Eha-Alumona-Breme-Mbu-Ikem road in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State,” they said in the statement.
They recalled that they had earlier in the year appealed to the governor to come to their rescue as the road was about to be cut off completely by gully erosion.
“Agu Umabor people are law abiding citizens and have a population of about 100,000 people.
“We are predominantly farmers and this is the only road through which we bring out our farm and other agricultural produce.
“We are again appealing to the Enugu State Government and all public spirited individuals to come to our rescue as the road needs urgent attention and may not likely survive the remaining part of the rainy season,” they stated.

Subsidy removal: Makinde extends wage award for workers, pensioners
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has announced the extension of N25,000 wage award to workers and N15,000 wage award to pensioners by another three months.
Makinde made this announcement on Saturday in Ibadan, the state capital during the 2024 World Teachers’ Day celebration with the theme: “Valuing Teachers’ Voices Towards a New Social Contract for Education”.
DAILY POST reports that the wage award to workers and pensioners was introduced by the governor as a result of the removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit, also known as petrol by the federal government.
Makinde declared that his administration will commence the payment of the N70,000 minimum wage once the issue of consequential salary adjustment has been addressed.
He said that the extension is to cover the period that the negotiation on the consequential adjustment will last.
He lauded teachers in the state for their massive support to him during the last election and their immeasurable contributions to building the state.
“On the minimum wage, negotiation will start next week and we will pay the N70,000 minimum wage. But the consequential adjustment is about to be negotiated. The NLC and our team will sit down to discuss it.
“We are going through challenges as a country. We have issues of minimum wage and fuel price but I want to appeal to you to say that tough times don’t last but tough people do. We will outlast these challenges we are faced with.”
“Any country that wants to develop must educate her people. So, for us in Oyo State, we will continue to specially look after our teachers, because they are dealing with our future.
“You teachers, you have to be put where you belong. So, I thank you for your support and dedication to duty. We still have a long way to go.
“And of course we will employ more teachers and we will put them in a conducive learning environment that would guarantee better outcomes for our students,” he said.
