Lawyer to Dominique Pelicot, Beatrice Zavarro, has said that his client will not appeal against his conviction for drugging and raping his wife and inviting strangers to rape her.
Zavarro said the 77-year-old former electrician, who has been sentenced for the maximum 20 years this month, wished to spare his now ex-wife, Gisèle Pelicot, a new ordeal.
He admitted there was also the risk of a new trial in front of a public jury that could mean a longer prison sentence.
DAILY POST reported that a French court had found Pelicot guilty of repeatedly drugging and raping his wife for almost a decade.
Pelicot also invited 50 others who were all found guilty of rape or sexual assault after a three-and-a-half-month trial.
They all have until midnight on Monday to lodge an appeal.
At least 17 are believed to have decided to contest their conviction and more may follow.
Gisèle Pelicot, 72, a retired logistics manager, believes she may have been raped more than 200 times by her husband and other men between 2011 and 2020.
Zavarro said on Monday, according to the Guardian UK, that Dominique Pelicot had decided not to appeal against his conviction because to do so would “force Gisèle into a new ordeal and new confrontations, which [he] rejects”.
She added that appealing against the guilty ruling when Pelicot admitted the charges, would involve “running an unnecessary risk.
“It is time to put an end to this judicially,” Zavarro said on Monday.

Baltasar Engonga, the sacked Director-General of the National Financial Investigation Agency, ANIF, of Equatorial Guinea, has been remanded.
Engonga was remanded in Malabo’s Black Beach Prison.
The sacked ANIF boss was involved in one of the greatest sex scandals in the history of the country.
The scandal broke out during an investigation into a fraud allegation that led to the discovery of about 400 sex tapes involving the ex-ANIF boss with several prominent women in the country.
The sextapes were discovered in Engonga’s home and office leading to widespread outcry.
The incident led to the Equatorial Guinea President, Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, dismissing Engonga.
According to Decree No. 118/2024, dated 4th November, the dismissal was due to “irregularities committed in the exercise of his functions, as well as inappropriate family and social conduct for the performance of public duties.”
Confirming the situation, French online blog Afrikmatin reported that Engonga, who was officially removed from his role on November 6, 2024, was subsequently chained and transferred to Malabo Central Prison.
He faces charges of corruption and embezzlement.
