Fubara urges new judges to uphold integrity, strengthen state judiciary
Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has suggested that the reasons behind the political crisis in the state are becoming clearer to the public.
Governor Fubara emphasized that challenging situations, such as political unrest, are often part of a natural process of growth and improvement.
He stated that the crisis may be a necessary phase before positive changes can emerge.
The governor made this assertion while addressing eight newly sworn-in judges at the Executive Chambers of Government House in Port Harcourt on Friday.
The eight High Court judges sworn in are Hon. Justice Frank Onyiri, Hon. Justice Victor Chinedum Ugoji, Hon. Justice Godswill Vidal Obomanu, Hon. Justice Rita Chituru Oguguo, Hon. Justice Alatuwo Elkanah Fubara, Hon. Justice Bariyima Sylvester Kokpan, Hon. Justice Lesi Wifa-Adedipe, and Hon. Justice Ibietela Innocent Madighi Obu.
Governor Fubara further stated that Rivers State, having endured the challenges of the crisis, is now in a period of renewal, with efforts underway to restore nearly 90 percent of what was considered lost or damaged.
He said, “I want to thank every one of you, more especially our judges. You’ve been very strong even in the face of this crisis that we find ourselves in. God will lead us through it. I think it’s for a purpose, and that purpose gradually is unfolding, and we are seeing it ourselves.
“Things have to get bad before it will get well. You don’t harvest a maize without planting it. When these seeds are planted, they decay and they now, from there, start growing.
“So, I strongly believe that what we are facing, at the stage we are, is for a rebirth of our State, and with your support, we are going to get everything right. At least, if not everything, 90 percent of our issues will be right.”
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, Governor Fubara reflected on the smooth and optimistic start of his administration, noting that the political family was united when he first assumed office.
However, he acknowledged that midway through, there were unexpected attempts to derail the administration.
Governor Fubara expressed gratitude to God, stating that despite the challenges, a new opportunity has emerged to stabilize governance, inspire hope among the people, and provide trusted leadership that is now widely embraced.
“We are here today to consummate that process so that there will be more judicial officers that will help to drive the process of our Judiciary in the State.
“This appointment wasn’t given to you by me, that is the truth. It is God that made it. Some of you here have looked for it in several ways.
“Some of you were even opportune to be magistrate nominees, but you didn’t make it. But, you are here today as Judges. It is only God that has made it, it is not me.”
Governor Fubara assured the newly sworn-in judges that he would never ask them to compromise their integrity, emphasizing his expectation that they stand firm in upholding the truth and restoring public confidence in the judiciary.
The Governor pledged continued support from his administration to ensure the judiciary has the necessary resources to carry out their duties effectively, enabling them to resist any pressure to lower their standards.
While congratulating the new judges, Governor Fubara urged them to work harmoniously with their senior colleagues, treating them with respect, so that they too may earn the respect of those who follow.
He also challenged the judges to prioritize due process in their administration of justice, stressing that due diligence is essential for the system to function efficiently and promote good governance.
