Three individuals were apprehended by the Lagos State Police Command’s Rapid Response Squad (RRS) on Wednesday for allegedly stealing iPhones from victims of a road accident in Ikeja, Lagos.
According to a statement on X.com from the RRS on Thursday, officers caught the suspects a short distance from the crash scene as they attempted to flee with the stolen items.
The RRS statement explained, “Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad last night arrested three suspected thieves for stealing two phones from accident victims on Governor’s Road, Alausa, Ikeja.
“The suspects: Isaiah Adegbenro (38), Edet Johnson (30), and Efe Sowemimo (28) were arrested a few metres away from the accident scene while trying to escape with the phones.
“The accident victims were travelling towards Ikeja in a red Toyota Camry 2010 when the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a road divider in front of the Adeyemi Bero end of Governor’s Road, Alausa, Ikeja.”
Instead of aiding the injured, the suspects reportedly searched the vehicle and the victims’ pockets, seizing an iPhone 15 valued at ₦1,300,000 and an iPhone 12 worth ₦620,000.
RRS officers, alerted to the theft, pursued and detained the suspects, retrieving the stolen phones.
The statement further noted that the operatives helped transport the victims to a hospital and cleared the vehicle from the road.
“The suspects have made significant confessions. They are to be charged to court today in line with the directives of the Commander, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), CSP Shola Jejeloye,” the statement added.
