Edo Govt suspends revenue collections in motorparks, others, calls for arrest of violators

The Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has ordered the indefinite suspension of revenue collection in motor parks and other locations across the state until further notice.

The governor also ordered the State Commissioner of Police to arrest anyone who flouts the order.

DAILY POST reports that the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Fred Itua, disclosed this on Wednesday in a statement made available to newsmen in Benin City.

Itua said the governor would review the issues surrounding the collections soon and decide on the way forward.

According to him, the collection of revenues in the state has been suspended indefinitely. Anyone seen collecting revenues on behalf of the state government will be arrested.

“The Commissioner of Police is hereby ordered to arrest anyone who flouts the order and collects any kind of revenue on behalf of the State Government.

“The Governor will soon address the issues and concerns raised. He will issue new directives soon. Until then, no one is authorized to collect revenue on behalf of the state government,” he said.

DAILY POST also reports that various commercial transport union members, as of about 6:30 am, invaded bus stops along Ekenwa Road, New Benin Market axis, Oba Market, among others, collecting N1000 each from commercial vehicles.

Four union members at Ekenwa are collecting N1000 each from every commercial vehicle.

Some of the unions have inscriptions on their official T-shirts, such as Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Drivers on Wheel, Ofonee, among others.

The development, however, resulted in a hike in transport fares by drivers from between N300 and N400 to N500.
