Niger: Ministry, emirate hold stakeholders meeting on farmers-herders crisis
The Niger State Ministry of Nomadic and Pastoral Affairs and the Minna Emirate’s Wakilin Waka office have jointly organised a stakeholders’ meeting to tackle the ongoing crisis between nomads and host communities in the Niger East senatorial district of the state.
The event, themed “Join Hands With Our Communities in Reviving Lost Relationships,” was aimed at promoting peace and understanding.
Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner for Nomadic and Pastoral Affairs, Hon. Umar Sanda Rebe, the permanent secretary, Salihu Mohammed Alfa, explained that the ministry was created by the state governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, to aid in peacebuilding among Fulani herders and their host farming communities for the economic prosperity of both sides.
According to him: ” Without peace, there would be no development. We advise that instead of taking guns and cutlasses or sticks, no one should not take matters to the police because it might worsen the issue. Therefore, when there is a misunderstanding, we are urging you to take the matter to the village or district heads.”
In her address, the director of Abdulsalam Abubakar Institute for Peace and Sustainable Development Studies, Dr Diamond P. Nebechukwu, noted the importance of peace, adding that “without peace, there would be no development and there would be no safety and security.”
Dr. Nebechukwu also emphasised the importance of seeking and promoting peace by communities. She noted that by doing so, residents can live without fear, going about their daily lives and providing for their loved ones.
She added: “Once there is conflict, people should not take laws into their own hands but always resolve it amicably, looking at the past relationships that have existed.”
Similarly, the chairman of Chanchaga LGA, Aminu Yakubu Ladan, stated that the need for peaceful coexistence cannot be overemphasised while calling for peace between the Fulani and farmers, as none can live in isolation.
“There is a need to sensitize the farming communities to always leave a route where the Fulanis can easily pass through with their cattle for grazing without resorting to entering people’s farms,” he noted.
Furthermore, Salihu Garba, who is the Wakilin Samarin Minna and represented the Emir of Minna, Alh. Farouk Bahago, explained that the emir has often stated the need for peaceful coexistence between the Fulanis and the farmers, as all sons and daughters of the Emirate.
“Violence had never in history solved a crisis. There is a need to embrace dialogue whenever there is misunderstanding, instead of taking laws into our hands, because peaceful coexistence is the trademark of the emirate, ” he said.

Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri has gotten its 9th substantive Rector in the person of Dr.Basillia Igbokwe who has been successfully inaugurated as the 9th Rector of the institution.
In her inaugural speech, Igbokwe expressed deep appreciation for the overwhelming support she has received from the staff, students, the entire polytechnic community, the leadership of the National Board for Technical Education, NBTE, and the Federal Ministry of Education,
The new Rector assured of her preparedness to reach out to her colleagues who contested with her for the office of the Rector of the institution, adding that she would strive for a harmonious working relationship with the Academic and Non-academic staff, labour leaders, student union government, and indeed, the entire polytechnic community.
Dr Igbokwe reiterated her resolve to vigorously pursue the vision of the founding fathers of the institution but added that such would only be possible with unity of purpose and the support of all stakeholders.
She listed some of the agenda for transforming the institution to include, prioritisation of staff welfare, commitment to fighting malpractices, extortion, lateness to duty, absenteeism, cultism, indecent dressing and other vices on campus.
Igbokwe vowed to restore environmental cleanliness in the institution; to run an open-door policy, to promote ICT and consolidate the Smart Campus Initiative.
Other issues top on the agenda of the new Rector include improving the Internally Generated Revenue, IGR and funding of the institution, to revive the institution’s tissue and table water production factories, as well as revive the polytechnic’s fishery and poultry.
She promised to link the institution to the national grid for improved power supply, to do more in the area of corporate social responsibility, CSR, and to ensure linkages or exchange programmes, among others.

Henry Ikoro expressed delight at the huge success recorded by the event, noting that it was God’s divine making.
Ikoro also expressed optimism that their team would move the polytechnic to new heights. He congratulated all those who ran elections with the new Rector describing them as eminently qualified, but reminded that only one person would lead at any point in time.
In her speech, Imo Deputy Governor, Chinyere Ekomaru who represented Governor Hope Uzodinma, urged the new Rector to be firm and pursue only those programmes that would reposition and transform the institution as a premier polytechnic in Nigeria.
The Imo number two citizen reminded Dr Igbokwe that the future of the institution rests on her shoulders for the next five years, stressing the need to bring innovations in vocational and technical education, to ensure a cordial relationship with the polytechnic community, and to eradicate examination malpractices and cultism as well as encourage research.
The leadership of various unions in the institution including the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU, students union, and departmental heads, among others, pledged support to the new Rector while urging her to prioritise the welfare of staff and learning environment of the students.

President Bola Tinubu has called on all stakeholders in the September 21 (tomorrow) governorship election in Edo State to conduct themselves peacefully and sportingly.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President appealed to the governorship candidates, political parties, and supporters to respect the democratic process and the people’s will.
Tinubu, who said he believes in the voters’ ability to make informed decisions about their future leaders, stressed that democracy thrives on civility, tolerance, patience, and respect for the rules of the game.
According to him, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has committed to conducting a free and fair election and urges all stakeholders to work together to ensure a successful and peaceful process.
The President applauded the governorship candidates and political parties for their campaigns, which he said have focused on issues that matter most to the people of Edo State, including improving livelihoods, promoting economic growth, and contributing to national development.
He implored all citizens in the state to remain peaceful and respectful throughout the voting process, urging them to resolve any disagreements amicably through the constituted authorities.
Tinubu, however, expressed confidence in the professionalism and integrity of security agencies and INEC officials, charging them to remain impartial and avoid any actions that could compromise the integrity of the electoral process.
