Brazil bus accident death toll climbs to 41
The death toll from a bus crash in southeastern Brazil on Sunday rose to 41.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva described the incident as a terrible tragedy.
The toll surged from the 38 deaths announced after the crash on Saturday when the Federal Highway Police called it the worst accident on the nation’s highways since 2007.
Speaking with reporters on Sunday, the Civil Police confirmed that 41 bodies had been removed from the accident scene near the mining town of Teófilo Otoni in Minas Gerais state.
The bus was reportedly travelling from São Paulo, in the southeast, to northeastern Bahia State when a large block of granite, apparently falling from a truck travelling in the opposite direction, struck the bus.
It was reported that the bus burst into flames during the ensuing wreck.
It took hours for rescue workers to extinguish the flames, clear the wreckage, and remove all victims.
The deceased included the bus driver and at least one child, authorities said.
The truck driver fled the scene, military police said, adding that his license had been suspended two years ago.
Lula took to social media to offer prayers for the recovery of the survivors of the tragedy, sending condolences to the victims’ families.

Ogun State Governor and Chairman of the Southern Governors Forum (SGF), Prince Dapo Abiodun, has expressed the forum’s deepest condolences to
the Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, over the loss of his son, Abdulwahab, in a road accident along the Dutse-Kafin-Hausa Road, on Thursday, just a day after the loss of the Governor’s mother, Hajia Maryam Namadi.
In a statement issued on behalf of the Forum and made available to newsmen in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, on Friday, Abiodun said the tragic events coming in quick succession could break anyone’s spirit.
He added, however, that the Forum took solace in the life that the deceased lived, urging the bereaved governor to take solace in the fact that his loved ones are in the bosom of Allah.
He said: “I and members of the Southern Governors Forum can hardly find the words to describe the devastating news of the loss of our brother and Governor of Jigawa State, H.E Umar Namadi’s son, Abdulwahab, in a road accident, just a day after the death of his very dear mother, Alhaja Maryam Namadi. Abdulwahab Umar Namadi, a young man full of life, died in a motor accident along the Dutse-Kafin-Hausa Road, on Thursday.
“No doubt, these extremely tragic events, coming in quick succession, and at a period of the Yuletide festivities when His Excellency and his loved ones were no doubt looking forward to the New Year with joy and excitement, can break anyone’s spirit. By a cruel twist of fate, Abdulwahab, who was mourning the loss of his dear grandmother, lost his life in a road accident.
“We are completely heartbroken. We commiserate with the Governor and people of Jigawa State and pray for the repose of the souls of these very dear loved ones.
“Deep and extremely painful as these tragic events are, we take consolation in the life that our dear Mama and our dear Abdulwahab lived. They did their best to make a difference in the lives of people, and will be sorely missed.
“May the Almighty Allah, the Most Merciful and the Most Benevolent grant them Aljanat Firdaus. May He comfort His Excellency and members of the Namadi family at this terrible hour of trial.
“On behalf of my brothers in the Southern Governors Forum, I offer our deepest condolences to His Excellency and pray that he will have the fortitude to bear these sad events knowing that his loved ones are in the bosom of Allah.”
