The Kano State Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has demanded the immediate removal of Amina Abdullahi HOD, the Kano State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, over an alleged assault on a female doctor.
The NMA issued an ultimatum to the state government, urging action to ensure justice and uphold respect for healthcare workers.
In a press release signed by NMA Chairman Dr. Abdurrahman Ali and Secretary Dr. Ibrahim D. Muhammad, the association confirmed that the incident took place on November 1 at the Emergency Paediatric Unit of Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.
The statement detailed that the commissioner, accompanied by her entourage and security personnel, reportedly harassed and assaulted the doctor due to the unavailability of a specific medication—a situation beyond the doctor’s control as she was attending to over 100 patients alone.
The NMA condemned the commissioner’s conduct, describing it as an abuse of power unbecoming of a public servant tasked with humanitarian duties.
“The Commissioner’s actions are a misuse of authority. This assault not only undermines the health sector’s integrity but also violates the ethical obligations public officials should uphold. Such behaviour endangers healthcare workers and disrupts essential services,” said Dr. Ali.
In response to this incident, the NMA convened an emergency meeting where members called for the commissioner’s immediate dismissal.
They also highlighted the need for increased staffing and security measures at the hospital to support the overwhelmed medical team.
“The doctor was on duty, single-handedly managing multiple pediatric cases under challenging conditions. This incident highlights broader challenges in our hospitals, including understaffing, lack of resources, and inadequate security for medical personnel,” Dr. Ali pointed out.
In a move underscoring their frustration, the NMA warned that they would suspend medical services at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital within 48 hours if their demands are not met.
“Our decision to suspend services is difficult but necessary. Healthcare professionals should not have to work in fear. This action calls on both the government and the public to recognize the daily challenges we face in delivering care,” Dr. Ali noted.
The association urged the Kano State Governor to take immediate action saying, “We call on the Governor to address these issues promptly to prevent further disruptions in the healthcare system.”
The association reiterated its willingness to work with the government to implement reforms aimed at strengthening healthcare services across Kano State.
