A powerful 6.4-magnitude earthquake has struck southern Taiwan early Tuesday, injuring at least 27 people and causing significant damage in several areas.
According to Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration, CWA, the quake occurred at a depth of 9.4 kilometers (6 miles), with its epicenter located in Dapu Township, Chiayi County.
The tremor struck shortly after midnight, followed by numerous aftershocks, including two with magnitudes exceeding 5.
The National Fire Agency, NFAl reported that several buildings in Tainan City, adjacent to Chiayi County, collapsed during the quake.
Rescuers successfully freed people trapped in the debris, including six people—among them a child—who were hospitalized with minor injuries.
In total, 15 people were taken to hospitals for injuries while others sought medical attention for cuts, bruises, and shock.
The NFA also documented widespread damage to roads and infrastructure, as well as power outages that left parts of the country in the dark. Recovery efforts are underway to restore electricity and repair damaged infrastructure.
Taiwan is situated along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a region known for frequent and intense seismic activity. The island regularly experiences earthquakes, some of which have been catastrophic.
This latest earthquake comes less than a year after a 7.2-magnitude quake struck eastern Taiwan in April 2024, claiming 18 lives and injuring over 1,000 people.
Authorities are continuing to assess the full extent of the damage. President Tsai Ing-wen called for immediate support for affected areas, urging residents to remain vigilant amid ongoing aftershocks.
The CWA warned that more aftershocks are likely in the coming days and advised residents to avoid damaged structures and remain prepared for emergencies.
International organizations have offered assistance to Taiwan. Neighboring countries, including Japan and the Philippines, extended their solidarity, given their shared vulnerability to seismic events.
