Farmers in Niger decry decline in food prices
Farmers in Niger State have expressed deep concern over the continuous drop in food prices, a trend they attribute to Nigerian food processing companies increasingly sourcing agricultural products from overseas markets.
The farmers lamented that while the reduced prices have brought relief to Nigerian consumers, they pose a significant threat to the livelihoods of local producers and traders, who rely heavily on the domestic market for income.
Hassan Ango Abdullahi, President of the Amana Farmers and Grains Suppliers Association of Nigeria, Shiroro branch, revealed the sharp decline in prices.
According to him, food processing companies now favor cheaper alternatives from countries like Chad and Ghana, a development he described as detrimental to local farmers.
“Initially, we sold a 100-kilogram bag of beans for N103,000 and soybeans for N105,000, but now the prices have dropped to N80,000,” Abdullahi disclosed.
