‘It’s a big shame’ – Tonye Cole reacts as Port Harcourt refinery finally commences production

Former governorship candidate in Rivers State and billionaire businessman, Tonye Cole, has said it was the biggest shame that Nigeria had none of its refineries working.

Mr Cole appeared on Channels Television hours after the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) spokesperson Olufemi Soneye announced that the Port Harcourt refinery has kicked off refining of crude oil.

The state-owned firm said the plant will begin at 60 percent capacity with 60,000 barrels per day of crude oil production.

The NNPCL also said that the Warri Refinery will soon commence petroleum product production.

Mr. Cole said the development will return businesses to the Rivers State capital and remove shame from the face of Nigeria.

“I think it’s extremely good news for Rivers State. The Port Harcourt Refinery used to be a central hub, and once it was working, you had trucks coming there, businesses operating, even from the mammy market.

“You had people who would sell water. So, any kind of business activity. Then you move to Nigeria, I’ll say, first of all, psychologically, over the years, I think it has been one of the biggest shames that an oil-producing country at the level of Nigeria could not say we have refineries that were working.

“You don’t say you’re that big yet you don’t have working refineries. It was a big shame to Nigeria. One of the things we needed to do was to remove that shame from our face.”

In reaction to a recent order allegedly issued by the Indigenous People Of Biafra, IPOB, directing residents to observe two days sit-at-home on October 21 and 22, the Imo State Police Command, in collaboration with the Armed Forces and other security agencies, have deployed security personnel at strategic locations within and outside the state capital

In reaction to a recent order allegedly issued by the Indigenous People Of Biafra, IPOB, directing residents to observe two days sit-at-home on October 21 and 22, the Imo State Police Command, in collaboration with the Armed Forces and other security agencies, have deployed security personnel at strategic locations within and outside the state capital to safeguard lives and properties.

A statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Henry Okoye, disclosed that the Police and other security agencies are embarking on ‘Show of Force Operations and Confidence Building Patrols’ across the state in response to the alleged IPOB threat.

The Command described the sit-at-home order as unlawful and advised citizens to go about their lawful businesses.

“Starting today, October 19, and continuing through October 23, security personnel will enhance visibility policing through these patrols.

” Additionally, detectives will conduct reconnaissance operations to gather actionable intelligence. These efforts aim to reassure the public and maintain law and order,” the statement said.

The Command urged citizens to remain calm and vigilant, continuing their daily activities while being mindful of their surroundings.

The statement further advised residents to be at alert and report any suspicious activity observed within their neighborhood to the nearest Police station or via the Command’s emergency line at 08034773600.

“To this end, the Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, appreciates the support of the good people of Imo State and assures them that their safety is the Command’s top priority.

“Together, we can enhance the peace and security in our dear State.”
