The DIrector-General spoke in Abuja on Monday to mark the National Day of Identity themed, “Digital Public Infrastructure – Enabling Access to Services in Nigeria.”
September 16 is the day set aside to highlight the importance of identity and its responsible use for inclusion, protection and empowerment.
She noted that with the Federal Government investments in social and palliative programmes to cushion the impact of the ongoing economic reforms on citizens, especially on the most vulnerable members of the society, the focus of the event was on a strong digital public infrastructure (DPI) to support the government’s initiatives is timely and relevant.
The DG shed light on the concept of DPI, the role NIMC plays as a key stakeholder, and the importance of DPI to facilitate seamless access to public and private services across different sectors such as financial, healthcare, agriculture, among others.
She explained that DPI refers to a digital network, which is typically built in the public sector, that enables countries to safely and efficiently deliver economic opportunities and social services to citizens and legal residents.
She said that DPI accelerates financial inclusion and transforms the lives of citizens by addressing challenges of physical distance and documentation, as well as high cost of transactions.
According to her, through this initiative, NIMC, responsible for the National Identification Number (NIN), has enrolled over 110 million Nigerians.
“The Student Loan Initiative showcases how DPI can eliminate financial barriers to education.
“By collaborating with 257 institutions, 332,715 students have been registered for loans, and over 18,000 students have already received payments through the initiative,” she said.

Again, vandals destroy Nigeria’s power transformer radiator at Obajana – TCN
The Transmission Company of Nigeria has announced that armed vandals invaded and damaged a 330/132/33 kilovolt, 150 megaamperes power transformer radiator at the ongoing Obajana Transmission Substation.
The spokesperson of TCN, Ndidi Mbah, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.
According to her, the incident occurred on the night of November 12, 2024, at approximately 11:55 PM.
“According to reports from security personnel at the site, the assailants opened fire indiscriminately, causing the guards to flee. During the attack, a 150MVA 330/132/33kV power transformer, already positioned on its plinth, was struck, resulting in a burst radiator.
“In response to the incident, TCN is evaluating the level of damage in collaboration with the contractor managing the project.
“This incident is part of a broader pattern of vandalism targeting transmission infrastructure across the country. The new Obajana Transmission Substation, which is designed to be a 1X150MVA 330/132/33kV capacity substation, will significantly enhance power supply to Kogi State and surrounding areas upon completion,” the company stated.
In the past months, TCN has reported several vandalization incidents at its facilities across the country.
Barely three days ago, TCN initiated the blackout in Lokoja Kogi State due to the vandalization of Lokoja-Gwagwalada 330 kilovolt transmission line 1.
The company had also blamed incessant national grid collapses in Nigeria on the vandalization of its facilities.
DAILY POST reports that in the past months, the National Grid had collapsed at least twelve times.

UI vice chancellor seeks support of security agencies
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, (UI), Professor Kayode Adebowale, has sought the support of security agencies in the state.
Adebowale urged the security agencies to protect the institution during visits to heads of the outfits on Monday.
The VC led a team from the university to pay courtesy visits to the General Officer Commanding 2 Mechanised Division of the Nigerian Army, General O. G. Onubogu; Commissioner of Police, Ayodele Sonubi; and Director of the Department of State Services, Mr. Rasheed Adeyinka Adelakun.
Adebowale while speaking, said the security challenges in the country have become hydra headed.
He added that combined and concerted efforts are needed to tackle insecurity in the state.
Speaking further, Adebowale stressed the need for the academia and the security forces to partner in order to maintain law and order in society.
He appreciated the support and services that the institution had received in the past during peace times and periods of unrest in the campus.
Onubogu, while speaking, commended the VC for visiting his office.
On his part, Sonubi appreciated the opportunities provided by the academia for men of the Force to actualize their academic dreams.
Adelakun, in his own contribution, assured that the organisation would surpass its earlier services to the institution.
