John Mahama condemns NPP attack on NDC supporters during Ayawaso North health walk

The Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has strongly condemned the recent violence clash involving supporters of the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the Ayawaso North constituency during a health walk at Mamobi.

The former President called out the NPP for its alleged role in clashes that erupted during a health walk in Ayawaso North. 

The shocking incident, which resulted in injuries to several individuals, has prompted further calls for accountability and justice from political and civil society leaders.

During a public address, Mr. Mahama recounted the distressing events from the health walk, noting that NDC members in Mamobi witnessed firsthand the chaos. 

“Even if there was a clash, it should not have led to violence and injury. But here we are, with people wielding weapons, firing shots, and injuring fellow citizens.” Mr. Mahama stated. 

The former President voiced concerns about the growing culture of impunity within the political establishment, suggesting that those responsible for the violence face no repercussions.

“The reason why this continues is because there is impunity. Those who fire shots know that nothing will happen to them.” The former President asserted. 

He referenced a troubling incident during which an individual was photographed brandishing a pistol, emphasizing the lack of accountability for such actions. 

“Watch; nothing will happen to them. And as long as nothing happens to them, it will continue.” He stated.

Mr. Mahama underscored the need for a unified response to such violence, urging the moral authorities of society including chiefs, religious leaders, and civil society organizations to take a stand.

He lamented the historical pattern of non-action from the government when similar incidents have occurred in the past, mentioning the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence as a relevant example.

Expressing frustration over the growing feelings of helplessness among citizens, the NDC flagvearer warned that if this trend of violence and impunity persists, it may lead to more individuals taking up arms in self-defense. 

“When people realize that the state cannot protect them, they will seek their own means of protection, and that will lead to a bloodbath.” He cautioned. 

Mr. Mahama called for immediate action to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attacks, stressing the importance of accountability in curbing future violence. 

“If people know that they will be arrested and dealt with by the law, they will think twice before engaging in such acts,” he concluded, urging all Ghanaians to speak out against the growing political violence in the country.
