UCH: Medical students protest disconnection of hostels by IBEDC
Hundreds of students of the University of Ibadan on Thursday protested the disconnection of their hostels within
the University College Hospital from the electricity supply grid in the state.
DAILY POST gathered that medical students in the institution who are undergoing medical training at the hospital reside in the hostels within the hospital.
Our correspondent reports that UCH has been experiencing power outage in the last one year but the matter was resolved during a meeting by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, top management of IBEDC and UCH.
The IBEDC pledged to restore electricity supply at UCH but left the hostels disconnected.
Following the development, the medical students on Thursday staged a peaceful protest against the disconnection.
DAILY POST reports that the angry students who carried various placards, shut down the entrance gate of the hospital in the early hours of Thursday, which led to heavy traffic around the area.
Some of the students placards read, “Enough is enough,” “IBEDC give us light,” “The present development is unacceptable,” “We have been in darkness for the past 105 days,” and “For how long are we going to continue in this situation?”
President of the Students Union, Bolaji Aweda who led the protesting students, declared that Adelabu had promised to restore power to the entire UCH.
Aweda warned that the protests will continue untill the electricity supply in their hostels is restored.
He said the students were surprised that the electricity supply at UCH has been restored but the one at the hostels were not.
“We are here to protest the deliberate disconnection of light of our halls of residence from the electricity that was restored to UCH, Wednesday.
“When the Minister came here on Monday, he made a promise that power will be restored to UCH, the whole of UCH in 24 to 48 hours. We were surprised to hear that we had been disconnected and we warned them that if there is light in UCH and no light in our hostels, we will shut down UCH itself.
“Yesterday (Wednesday) evening, the light was restored to UCH and we currently do not have light. There is light in almost every part of UCH except our hostels. That will not happen, we are here until they restore our electricity. We will be here until they restore electricity and if they don’t restore it, in the next month, we will continue to be here.”

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Delta State, Sunny Onuesoke have asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s led Federal Government and Dangote Refinery to agree on the same price and allow the Independent marketers to purchase petroleum products from Dangote Refinery.

He alleged that there were ongoing backdoor arrangements by the parties involved in the negotiation of the price of petrol.
Chief Onuesoke also said the parties involved in the “sinister intentions” are making sure Nigerians continue to suffer the effect of the high cost of petrol.
“If you look at the whole shenanigans, you would see some sort of back door arrangement on the part of the parties involved in the entire process who in a sinister intention of making sure Nigerians continue to suffer the plight of high price pms which has resulted in so much suffering for the people.”
