Gov Buni inaugurates Yobe climate change council
Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has inaugurated a seven-member State Climate Change Council aimed at addressing the growing challenges of desertification and climate change in the state.
A statement released by Alhaji Shuaibu Abdullahi, Press Secretary to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, revealed that the council, chaired by Governor Buni, will focus on developing strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change and restore degraded ecosystems across the state.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Baba Malam Wali, during the inauguration in Damaturu, Governor Buni assured citizens of his administration’s readiness to take decisive action on climate issues.
“Yobe State is one of the most vulnerable states in Nigeria, with desertification and land degradation posing significant threats to livelihoods,” he said.
The council comprises the Commissioners of Environment, Women Affairs, and Finance, alongside Professor Ibrahim M. Sheriff, Mr. Lawan Ahmed, and Dr. Abdullahi Hassan Gana, who will serve as secretary, with Bamai Zanna as assistant secretary.
During its inaugural meeting, the council deliberated on critical issues, including ecosystem restoration, climate change mitigation, and the formulation of a state climate change policy.
It also resolved to partner with the Milestone Centre for Sustainable Development and Food Security and Climate Action to access grants and interventions aimed at supporting climate resilience programs.
