Benue Govt shuts school over poor standards
The Benue State Government on Monday sealed Benedictine Order of Peace and Unity Academy Foundation, Nyiman, Makurdi, over failure to meet approved standards.
The Director General, Bureau for Education Quality Assurance, BEQA, Terna Francis, who led the team, said the school was operating in an uncompleted hotel building.
Francis stated that the school had no curriculum, lesson plan, scheme of work, qualified teachers, and was operating three different schools within the uncompleted building.
He said that Benedictine Order Academy was not registered and the government did not approve its existence. He equally warned that the government would not allow any substandard school to exist in the state.
The director said BEQA has identified 2,416 illegal schools in the state and has already issued all the necessary notices to the proprietors to either meet the required standard or shut down.
“The risk involved in keeping children in such buildings cannot be overemphasised.
“As government, as a regulatory body, we cannot allow anything harmful or evil to happen to these children of ours.
“That is why I’m here with the management of BEQA in collaboration with the GM Urban Development Board to seal the school,” he said.
He advised parents to withdraw their children from the school that has neither uniforms nor records and take them to government-approved institutions of learning within the state.

Nigeria deserves permanent UN security council seat – Biden
US President, Joe Biden says Nigeria deserves a permanent seat at the United Nations security seat.
This is as he said his country was committed to seeing Africa have two permanent seats at the United Nations, UN, security council.
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, said Biden made his stance on Nigeria’s quest for a permanent UN security council seat during a phone call to President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday evening.
Tuggar said the 30-minute phone call between the two leaders was against the backdrop of the release of Tigran Gambaryan, Binance’s head of finance crime compliance, on October 23.
The minister quoted the US president as saying that he did not see why Nigeria should not have a permanent seat at the UN security council.
“The two leaders also discussed the issue of permanent seats, and the United Nations security council and President Biden once again assured that the United States is committed to seeing Africa having two permanent seats,” Tuggar added.
Recall that Africa has long clamoured for equal representation in the UN security council.
DAILY POST reports that the UN General Assembly, each year elects five new members from different geographical zones for a two-year term on the council.
Africa has three rotational seats on the 15-member council.
