Authorities of Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, in the Cross River State have raised the alarm over the influx
of illegal immigrants in Calabar.
“There are too many illegal immigrants, especially from neighbouring Cameroon. And we’re doing everything legally possible to ease them out or officially repatriate them,” Mrs Arisha Ginika who represented the state comptroller of Immigration, Prisca Ogbodo, said.
She spoke at a workshop on effective oversight, monitoring and implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice law in Cross River State, organised by an NGO, Cleen Foundation.
Ginika alleged that the illegal immigrants are involved in perpetrating crimes in the state.
“So many non-Nigerians, especially Cameroonians have entered the state through unrecognized routes, many without official passports. Their numbers are really huge. They come in droves.
“Many of them are in hotels, perpetrating heinous crimes, including cyber crimes, which in street parlance is now popularly called Hustling Kingdom.
“They’re giving us sleepless nights. We move from hotels to hotels, fishing them out and profiling them. In many cases, we ease them out by moving them out in trucks. We have repatriated a good number.
“We get hoteliers to submit list of their guests, international passports and other information to act on.
“We have cautioned against landlords and hoteliers who harbour them without official authorisation.
“From their passports we are able to note those expatriates who cut corners, and who are occupying positions meant for Nigerians, or who have overstayed, bbn or whose papers must have expired.”
She stated that the Immigration Service has problems identifying Nigerians from communities with common boundaries with Cameroon.
According to her, many will claim Nigerian nativity because many Cameroonians speak same languages and share common ancestry with Nigerians from of Boki, Ikom and Etung, among others.
She explained that the illegal immigrants are different from official refugees who fled the Ambazonian conflict in southwest Cameroon into the state, and are in various camps in Ogoja and Akamkpa.
