Governor Alia calls for Unity in Benue amid criticism
The Chief Press Secretary to the Benue State Governor, Sir Tersoo Kula, has stated that the funeral oration delivered by Governor Hyacinth Alia during the burial ceremony of a traditional ruler in Mbadede, Vandeikya LGA, was a call for unity in the state.
During his speech at the burial ceremony, Governor Alia affirmed that he is the validly elected governor of the state and admonished individuals who are uncomfortable with this to consider relocating to other states.
His remarks generated strong reactions from various segments of the public in the state.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Sir Kula said the government welcomes constructive criticism as a hallmark of democracy.
He emphasized that the portrayal of the Governor’s assertions lacks a nuanced understanding of the context and the challenges facing the state.
“Governor Alia’s statements regarding the need for a firm stance against any perceived undermining of his authority were not a display of pride or insecurity but rather a call for respect for the office he occupies.
“No leader would choose pretension at a time when the drums of dissent echo through the disparagement of his person and office by detractors.
“The Governor needed to reaffirm his commitment to maintaining order and governance.
“His statements underscored the paramount need for unity and cooperation among all stakeholders in the state to address the pressing issues confronting us.”
Kula dismissed claims that the Governor was delusional in his comments during the burial ceremony.
“In a democracy, all eligible citizens have equal rights to contest elections, and Governor Alia respects this right. He also understands that he must earn the trust of the electorate through his actions and policies. His dedication to delivering for the people of Benue State remains unwavering, and he is focused on achieving results during his current term.
“He is confident that his vision extends beyond his time in office. His aim is to create a legacy of peace, security, and prosperity that future leaders can build upon. His emphasis on agricultural development, confidence-building, and infrastructure is part of a broader strategy to uplift the lives of Benue citizens.
“Therefore, while we acknowledge and appreciate the feedback provided by commentators, we urge them to recognize the complexities of leadership and the challenges leaders face.
“As a leader committed to serving the people of Benue State with integrity, transparency, and dedication, Governor Hyacinth Alia is always ready to welcome constructive dialogue and engagement from all sectors of society as we work together to build a brighter future for our state.”
