The Defence Headquarters, DHQ has said the troops of Operation Delta Safe destroyed 897 illegal refining sites across the Niger Delta region in the third quarter of the year. The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, made this known while briefing newsmen on the operations of the armed forces, on Thursday in Abuja.

The Defence Headquarters, DHQ has said the troops of Operation Delta Safe destroyed 897 illegal refining sites across the Niger Delta region in the third quarter of the year.
The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, made this known while briefing newsmen on the operations of the armed forces, on Thursday in Abuja.
Buba said the troops also destroyed 370 wooden boats and recovered 48 assorted weapons and 672 assorted ammunition during the period.
He said the troops also apprehended 447 persons involved in crude oil theft and rescued 48 kidnapped hostages as well as recovered 12.1 million litres of stolen crude oil; 2.6 million litres of AGO; 6,970 litres of DPK and 31,450 litres of PMS.
According to him, troops of Operation Delta Safe maintained the momentum against the activities of crude oil theft during the third quarter of the year.
“The air component conducted air interdictions on several illegal crude oil refining sites during the period, destroying over 100 of such sites, boats, vehicles among other equipment,” he said.
In the South East, Buba said troops of Operation UDO ΚΑ, neutralised 180 combatants, apprehended 354 IPOB/ESN criminals and rescued 148 kidnapped hostages.
He said the troops recovered 28 AK47 rifles, 44 pump action guns, 58 assorted arms, and 3,456 rounds of 7.62mm special, among others.
According to him, troops apprehended high-profile members of IPOB/ESN at Agwu Local Government Area of Enugu State and several others who he said were assisting in the ongoing investigation.
Buba said the ongoing counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations across the country had prioritised the killing of terrorist leadership and the destruction of terror infrastructure.
“Accordingly, troops are effectively attacking terrorist leaders, commanders, combatants, as well as their rank and file operatives.
“All through the stretch of the third quarter of the year, synchronised bombardment by air and ground forces significantly diminished terrorist military capabilities and network.
“On the whole, troops are keeping pressure on terrorists until they are totally defeated. We are focussed on destroying both their military capability as well as their will to fight off the terrorist. Lastly, we are attacking any threat we identify, and removing it.” he said.

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), has asked Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, and 36 States Governors to stop giving cars and houses to judges.
SERAP said Wike and the Governors are usurping the authority and responsibilities of the National Judicial Council, NJC through giving cars and houses to judges.
This was contained in an open letter signed by SERAP Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, made available to DAILY POST on Sunday.
The letter was also copied to Ms. Margaret Satterthwaite, UN Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers.
SERAP said it shall consider appropriate legal actions to compel Tinubu’s government and the attorneys general of the 36 states to comply with the organization’s request in the public interest.
SERAP argued that “Politicians ought to keep their hands off the judiciary and respect and protect its integrity and independence. Politicians must treat judges with dignity and respect.”
According to the statement, such practices of gifting judges cars and houses are clearly antithetical to the constitutional principles of separation of powers, checks and balances and the rule of law, and may create the perception that the judiciary is subservient to the executive.
SERAP, therefore, urged Tinubu to direct the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Mr Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, to challenge in court the constitutionality and legality of the practices by members of the executive of giving cars and houses to judges in Abuja and across the states.
SERAP said, “The Nigerian Constitution and international standards make clear that the judiciary is neither subservient to the executive nor the legislature.”
“Undermining the fundamental principle of separation of powers risks constraining the ability of the judiciary to act as a check on the executive.”
“Your government has the constitutional and international obligations to promote public confidence in the judiciary and safeguard the rule of law.”
