Legal Aid Council moves to provide representation for detained suspects in Abia
Members from the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, led by their Director General, Aliyu Abubakar, have expressed their commitment to providing legal representation for suspects who are detained in police custody in Abia State
The Council, which made this known at the Abia State Police Command Headquarters, Umuahia, during their visit to the Commissioner of Police, Abia State, Danladi Isa, expressed the council’s desire to strengthen collaboration with the police as principal partners for effective justice delivery.
The Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Danladi Isa, acknowledging the critical role of legal representation in upholding justice and assured them of the Command’s dedication to upholding the adjudication of the Criminal Justice Act, Abia State, especially in ensuring fairness and due process in investigations.
Meanwhile, the Abia State Commissioner of Police has appealed to the Abia residents to trust and confide in the police with credible information that would lead to arrest of criminals.
He made the call at his office when he recieved members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Abia State Council, who came to present him with certificate of credence for his efforts in crime fighting in the State.
He called for a fair report of Police activities by the NUJ members and informed the journalists led by their Chairman, Chidi Asonye that some police officers were dismissed or demoted under his watch after investigations, for involving in unprofessional conducts.
Earlier in his speech, Asonye said that there would be a sustained partnership between the police and members of the NUJ in maintenance of peace and security in Abia.
