UNICEF laments challenges facing girl-child, calls for action
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has expressed concern that the girl child faces several challenges that deny them their rights, restrict their choices and limit their future.
Celine Lafoucriere, UNICEF’s Chief of the Field Office for South-West Nigeria, explained that while one in every five women between the ages of 20 and 24 marry as children, up to 75 percent of new HIV infections are among adolescent girls.
Lafoucriere stated this in a statement made available to newsmen to commemorate the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child.
She emphasized that one of every three females suffers from anemia, and others face major impediments to education, employment, and training.
She said, “Today one in five women aged between 20 and 24 years old are married as children, nearly one in four partners married adolescent girls have experienced sexual or physical abuse, globally up to 75 percent of new HIV infections are among adolescents girls.
“One in three girls suffers from anemia which is a form of malnutrition. One in four compared to boys are not in any form of education, employment or training.”
Lafoucriere speaking on this year’s theme, “Girls’ Vision for the Future,” argued that irrespective of these challenges they must be empowered while still being protected, respected, and given equal opportunity.
“As you know, October 11 is the key global moment to celebrate girls and amplify their voices, directions and their leadership. The day also belongs to everyone who cares about girls and taking action to full protection of their rights.”
She maintained that girls can reach their full potential and make a positive impact on a more equal world if they are given the proper chances, resources, and support.
Lafoucriere, however, called on members of the society, groups, and governments to support girls and take steps to uphold their rights, advance their education, and give them the necessary tools needed to succeed.
“Girls alone cannot bring about the desired change. They need allies who listen to and respond to their needs – like you and me. Together; we can build a future in which every girl’s rights are protected.
“Evidence shows that with the right support, resources, and opportunities, the potential of girls around the world is limitless. When girls achieve their goals, we all move closer to achieving our global goals,” she stated.
