Britain on Saturday said in recent days it had tracked six Russian naval and merchant ships carrying ammunition used in Syria as they sailed through the Channel.

In a statement, the British defence ministry said that the ships shadowed by the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force were withdrawing from Syria following the ousting of its president, Bashar al-Assad, a close Russian ally, in December.

It was gathered that Russia has been evacuating its military assets from Syria since Assad’s overthrow, the ministry said, describing it as a blow to (Moscow’s) ambitions in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, the Russian embassy in London has not yet commented on the statement.

“These ships were retreating from Syria after Putin abandoned his ally Assad, yet they were still armed and full of ammunition. This shows Russia is weakened but remains a threat,” defence minister, John Healey said.

Russia hopes to retain the use of naval and air bases in Syria under the new Islamist leadership that took power after Assad fled to Moscow following 13 years of civil war in which Russian troops had intervened on his behalf.

The Coalition for Energy Reforms and Good Governance Advocacy has called on the Federal Government to immediately investigate alleged corruptions in the oil sector.

The coalition made the call on Friday during a press conference in Abuja while reacting to the recent hike in the pump price of the Premium Motor Spirit, PMS otherwise known as petrol.

DAILY POST recalls that the NNPCL on Wednesday increased the pump price of the petroleum product across the country.

The development has continued to trigger reactions from concerned citizens, who condemned the move, citing the worsening economic crisis.

Speaking on the matter, convener of the coalition, Yakubu Dauda, who addressed journalists, lamented that the Mele Kyari-led Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL failed to “deliver on its promises to improve the Nigerian petroleum sector.”

He cited the inability of the NNPCL to revive local refineries as one of the major failures of Kyari’s leadership.

He said, “The Nigerian government must immediately conduct a comprehensive audit of the NNPCL’s operations, focusing particularly on the allegations of corruption and the unnecessary charges that have been added to the price of PMS.

“Those found responsible for inflating fuel prices and sabotaging local refineries must be held accountable, regardless of their positions of power.

“Furthermore, we call on the government to urgently invest in Nigeria’s local refineries and put an end to the reliance on imported fuel.

“Nigeria has the resources, the manpower, and the expertise to become a net exporter of petroleum products, but this can only happen if we break free from the grip of the corrupt cabals that have hijacked the industry.”
