Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has blamed the collapsed mast that killed a driver at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on Thursday night on the alleged poor work done by contractors hired by the immediate past government of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which installed the mast.

DAILY POST reports that Governor Okpebholo made the allegation through a statement issued to newsmen by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, on Friday.

Okpebholo, who identified the deceased as Pius Etim, expressed his condolences to the family and promised to investigate the work done by the contractor.

While alleging that the PDP in the state was celebrating the unfortunate incident, he nonetheless offered his deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of the deceased.

He described the alleged celebration by the PDP as callous and lacking empathy for the family of the deceased.

He opined that the celebration showed that the PDP in Edo State had lost touch with the people it once governed.

The Governor vowed to prosecute the contractors or any PDP members who may have been responsible for the poor construction work, stating that if found liable, they would face the full wrath of the law.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of a young man, Pius Etim, during the intense rainfall and the collapse of a mast at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.”

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of Pius Etim during this difficult time. On behalf of the people of Edo State, I offer my deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this period of grief.”

He, however, frowned at the attitude of leaders and members of the opposition PDP, who, according to him, took to various social media platforms on Thursday night to celebrate the unfortunate death of Pius Etim.

“Such callousness and lack of empathy for the family of the deceased show that the PDP in Edo State has lost touch with the people it once governed.

“Preliminary investigations show that the collapsed structure at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium was erected by the administration of Godwin Obaseki, which did a shabby job. It is unfortunate that Obaseki and the PDP in Edo State, known for their lack of integrity, hired compromised contractors to erect defective structures at the stadium.

“The poor job executed by the administration of Obaseki at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, which led to the unfortunate death of Pius Etim, will be investigated. The contractors or PDP members who may have handled the poor work, if found liable, will face the full wrath of the law,” he said.

DAILY POST had earlier reported that a middle-aged man was killed by a broadcast mast that fell on him during a heavy downpour in Benin City, Edo State.

It was learned that the mast collapsed due to the strong winds that accompanied the rain.

The incident disrupted a praise night planned as part of activities to mark Governor Monday Okpebholo’s 100 days in office.

A source who spoke to journalists identified the deceased as the driver of the decorator responsible for the praise night setup.

According to the source, the man was killed by the falling mast while trying to salvage his employer’s decorating materials.

A police officer at the scene, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the strong winds caused the mast to collapse on the deceased.

“We were all gathered at the stadium, waiting for the praise night to commence when the wind picked up. Unfortunately, the mast fell and killed the man instantly. His head was shattered—it was a gory sight.

“I learned that he was the driver of the person hired to decorate the venue. Most people left the stadium after the rain subsided,” he said.

The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise, CPPE, has stated that Nigeria’s 3.84 per cent Gross Domestic Product, GDP growth rate in the fourth quarter of 2024 reflects both the gradual recovery of the nation’s economy and the resilience of Nigerian entrepreneurs.

The Chief Executive Officer of CPPE, Muda Yusuf, made this assertion in response to the GDP report released by the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, on Tuesday.

According to the report, Nigeria’s GDP growth in Q4 was primarily driven by the services sector.

Reacting to the development, CPPE stated: “The Q4 2024 GDP growth of 3.84 per cent is a reflection of both the gradual recovery of the economy and the resilience of Nigerian entrepreneurs. Despite the daunting macroeconomic and structural headwinds, private investors have continued to forge ahead.

“It is, however, important to note that macroeconomic challenges began to ease in the second half of 2024. The naira exchange rate has remained relatively stable since then, inflationary pressures have marginally declined, and energy prices have also fallen slightly. Overall, investor confidence has shown positive signs in recent months.

“These factors have contributed to the modest GDP performance. It is also noteworthy that the overall GDP growth for 2024 was recorded at 3.40 per cent.

“One striking outcome of the Q4 GDP report was the recovery of the petroleum refining sector, which emerged from decades of recession to post an impressive GDP growth of 9.6 per cent.

“This was one of the strongest sectoral performances within the strategic sectors of the economy. The growth can largely be attributed to the commencement of refining operations by the Dangote Refinery and the NNPC refineries.

“However, the services sector continues to outperform the real sector of the economy, largely due to persistent structural impediments affecting real sector productivity.

“The agricultural sector recorded a meagre 1.76 per cent growth, manufacturing posted 1.79 per cent, while real estate grew by just 0.79 per cent.

“In contrast, financial institutions grew by 27.8 per cent, road transportation by 23 per cent, telecommunications by 6.8 per cent, and railways by 43 per cent. However, the aviation and textile sectors remained in recession.

“The GDP report highlights the gradual recovery of the economy and the resilience of the Nigerian private sector. It also underscores the need to consolidate the gains in macroeconomic stability and address the productivity challenges constraining real sector performance.”
