Niall McAleer is the Regional Manager for the MiddleEast and Africa region at Ulster University. He is a seasoned professional in international student recruitment with over a decade of experience in the field. With a proven track record of success, Niall has dedicated the last five years of his career to Ulster University, where he has played a pivotal role in expanding the university’s global reach, particularly in the Middle East and Africa regions. In this interview with GBENGA SALAU, he spoke about his strategic approach, the institutions track record of excellence and how his many visits to Nigeria, has been instrumental in supporting the growth of the Nigerian student population at Ulster University.

What are the scholarship opportunities in your institution and what does it take to benefit from or access them?
Recently, Nigerian students have faced difficulties due to the currency situation in Nigeria which has led many to reconsider the affordability of international education. We take great pride in our diverse student body and strive to implement measures that address challenges in different regions.

Ulster University is currently ranked 28th overall in the UK (The Guardian University Guide 2024).  Many of the courses delivered at Ulster University hold great merit with a number of courses ranked in the top 5, 10 and top 20 in the UK.

You and your team will be visiting Nigeria, what is the reason?
Our visit to Nigeria will provide a valuable opportunity to guide, prepare, and support applicants joining Ulster University in September 2024. Meeting with our new students in Nigeria before they travel to the UK allows us to engage more meaningfully. This visit enables us to address questions and alleviate any final concerns students or their families may have.

Since your university’s foray to Nigeria, what would you consider the greatest achievement?
Over the past decade, Ulster University has cultivated a strong and dynamic relationship with Nigeria, welcoming an increasing number of Nigerian students each year. The university’s diverse and inclusive campus environment has been greatly enriched by the cultural contributions and academic excellence of its Nigerian student body.
