Association seeks quality infrastructure in public schools

Unity Schools Old Students Association (USOSA) has said that quality education infrastructure is the key to attracting international and local students into public schools in Nigeria.

President General of the association, Michael Magaji, said this in Abuja, during a press briefing on the 41st plenary scheduled to be held from 12 to 13 July in Port-Harcourt, with the theme: ‘Education is the key Foundation For Building Legacies and our United Future’.

He said the plenary is expected to deliberate on issues regarding unity Schools across the country and chart a way forward for public education.

Magaji explained that the initiative aims to provide state-of-the-art facilities, fostering a conducive environment for academic excellence and unity among students from diverse backgrounds.

He said that the association on its part would continue to provide the basics that would improve learning outcomes in unity schools, including regular training and retraining of teachers to boost education.

Magaji said: “What we are saying is that, the moment you build a school to world-class standards, you are going to get people coming and enrolling from everywhere.

“Nigeria is leading in education across Africa, there are many foreigners in Nigeria. West Africans and non-Africans, if they get world-class education at a federal government college, they will come to a federal government college. So that is the whole idea.

“Once you put the quality there at the right price, you attract people and we believe that is possible. I also believe that as president-general, one day a time will come where you will start seeing people leaving private schools back to unity schools.

“It is already happening. I can tell you there are some areas where people are leaving their private schools to come back to unity schools because they are cheaper, they have good infrastructure, they have good teachers. It’s happening already even as we speak.

“That is our vision as USOSA. I’m not saying they should close down, but I’m just simply saying we will have the quality that will attract. I have gone around so many schools. I was in Calabar, I was in Abuloma. These girls are doing great things in their schools. Anybody could actually come and school there, even foreigners.

“So it is possible to ensure our education has an international standard. And once we can provide that standard, there is no reason why we cannot still attract those kinds of people back to those schools.”
