The Federal Government has commissioned the first-ever barracks for personnel of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Adamawa State, 35 years after the agency’s establishment.
The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, inaugurated the barracks on Tuesday in Yola.

He emphasized that the facility would provide secure residential and office accommodations for NDLEA officers, enhancing their effectiveness and operational efficiency.

“This barracks is more than just a place of residence; it is a fortress of resilience and a beacon of hope for our nation’s future,” Fagbemi said. “It reinforces the principle that justice begins with those who enforce it, and it is our collective responsibility to provide them with the necessary resources to carry out their responsibilities effectively.”

The minister also commended former President Muhammadu Buhari for initiating the barracks project and lauded President Tinubu and Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for their roles in bringing the vision to life.

Chairman of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd), described the barracks as a crucial development for the safety and welfare of the agency’s personnel. He revealed that NDLEA officers had long faced security threats due to the lack of designated accommodation, leading to incidents where personnel were targeted and killed.

“This year marks NDLEA’s 35th anniversary, and the absence of dedicated accommodation has been a major challenge,” Marwa stated. “Tragically, quite a number of our personnel have been trailed to their houses and murdered. This facility is a testament to our resolve to win the fight against drug abuse and trafficking in Nigeria.”

Located on an 18-hectare site in Kwanan Waya, a suburb of Yola, the barracks features modern administrative buildings, a detention facility, a state-of-the-art exhibit room, watchtowers, and operational pavilions. It also includes residential quarters comprising 80 one-bedroom terrace flats, 120 two-bedroom semi-detached flats, and 60 three-bedroom semi-detached flats.
Additionally, the facility is equipped with enhanced security features, a generator house for uninterrupted power supply, parking spaces, a parade ground, a service bay, and a perimeter fence.

The newly commissioned phase one of the project will accommodate 500 NDLEA personnel, with two more phases planned for future expansion.
