The Commandant of Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), Cross River State Command, Dr. Bassey Ogar, has been conferred with the prestigious Nelson Mandela Leadership Award. Also, he has been appointed as ECOWAS Youth Ambassador by the Cape Verde-based West African Youth Council (WAYC).
Speaking with journalists in Calabar, shortly after his arrival from The Gambia, where the dual accolades were conferred on him. Dr. Ogar expressed gratitude to the regional organisation for the recognition. He also outlined his goals as ECOWAS Youth Ambassador.
The West African Youth Council (WAYC), headquartered in Cape Verde, provides a platform for youth participation in politics. And also socio-economic activities, and governance in West Africa. With the objective of promoting youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, and leadership development in the region.
He said the award is not just a recognition of his immense achievements. It is also a call to higher responsibility and action.
“As ECOWAS Youth Ambassador, I will dedicate myself to empowering young people across West Africa, amplify their voices, and foster a spirit of unity, solidarity, cooperation, peace, security, justice, and development.”
Dr. Ogar stressed his mission to engage with youth leaders, entrepreneurs, investors, and innovators, leveraging his expertise in public and private sectors to support sustainable development projects and policy initiatives.

“I look forward to establishing partnerships with organisations, governments, and stakeholders to create opportunities for capacity building, skills development, and resource sharing,” he said.
The award recipient said he will advocate for policies and programs that prioritise education, employment, and entrepreneurship. Ensuring that young people are at the forefront of the region’s economic and social transformation.
