Nigerian govt to arraign suspected terrorists linked to Bello Turji

The Federal Government will on Monday arraign five suspected terrorists linked to the notorious terrorist kingpin, Bello Turji, at a Federal High Court in Abuja.

The suspects will be arraigned by the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, before Justice Emeka Nwite.

They were to be arraigned on Friday but their plea could not be taken due to lack of a lawyer to appear for them.

Counsel for the AGF, David Kaswe, prayed for a short adjournment to enable them engage a counsel of their choice and Justice Nwite fixed Monday for their arraignment.

The federal government, through the office of the AGF, had filed the 11-count charge marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/633/2024 against the eight defendants, three of whom are at large.

In the charge filed on December 16 by M.B. Abubakar, the Director of the Department of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Musa Kamarawa; Abubakar Hashimu, a.k.a. Doctor; Bashir Abdullahi; Samuel Chinedu and Lucky Chukwuma were sued as first to fifth defendants respectively.

Bello Turji, Aminu Muhammad and Sani Lawal, who are all at large were also sued as 6th to 8th defendants.

They were alleged to have provided material services to terrorist groups led by Turji, Kachalla Halilu, Danbokolo, Lawali, Atarwatse, Buderi and others, by procuring and supplying illicit drugs, including penta injections and cannabis plants, aka indian hemp; food items; military and police uniforms, camouflage, boots, caps and building materials.

They were also accused of providing bags of cement, cover zinc, bags of nails, M.M iron rods, etc., to terrorist camps in the forests located in Zamfara, Sokoto and Kaduna States.

The offence is said to be contrary to Section 17 of the Terrorism, Prevention, Amendment Act 2013 and punishable under the same section of the Act.

In count four, Kamarawa, Muhammad, still at large and Lawal, also at large, sometime in 2021 in Sokoto State, allegedly aided and abetted the commission of acts of terrorism by acquiring a military gun truck from Libya and supplying same to a terrorist, Kachalla Halilu, at a cost of approximately N28.5 million (28,500,000).

They were alleged to have paid for the gun truck partly in cash and partly via electronic transfer.

“And which you knew or had reason to believe that this vehicle would be used by Kachalla Halilu, a known terrorist, to commit acts of terrorism.

“You thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 18 (a) of the Terrorism (Prevention) (Amendment) Act 2013 and punishable under the same section of the Act,” the count read in part.

In count five, Kamarawa, Hashimu a.k.a Doctor, and Abdullahi, sometime in 2018 in Sokoto State, were alleged to have aided and abetted the commission of acts of terrorism by providing material services, including wound care, medication, and shelter, to treat gunshot injuries sustained by Bello Turji after he led his terrorist group to attack Tungar Kolo Village in Zurmi L.G.A. of Zamfara

The offence is contrary to Section 8 (1) (b) of the Terrorism (Prevention) (Amendment) Act 2013 and is punishable under the same section of the Act.

Following his clearance of involvement in alleged adultery by a Kano Upper Shari’a Court, the Jigawa State Government has lifted the suspension of the Commissioner for Special Duties, Auwalu Sankara.

Governor Malam Umar Namadi lifted the suspension on Sankara with immediate effect.

This was contained in a statement signed and made available to newsmen by the Secretary to the Government of Jigawa State, Malam Bala Ibrahim.

“It would be recalled that the commissioner was suspended based on alleged involvement in an incidence reported before Kano State Hisbah Board.

“The lifting of the suspension followed his discharge and acquittal by an Upper Sha’riah Court in Kano, Kano.”

Already Sankara has been directed to report back to his duty post.

When contacted on phone, the commissioner, Auwalu Sankara, thanked God for clearing him of any wrong doing and also commended Governor Umar Namadi and his cabinet for their understanding during his trying period.

About 24 hours to Christmas, the prices of cooking gas and food items have skyrocketed in Kaduna.

The prices of provisions, grains and other staple food items are rising steadily in markets and shops across the state, with many people saying that they cannot afford to buy anything to celebrate the Christmas with their families.

Checks by DAILY POST on Tuesday in Kaduna showed that the prices of food items like rice, beans, yams, garri and noodles had gone up about four times in 2024 alone.

At the Sheikh Abubakar Gumi market, Kaduna’s central market, a 50kg bag of foreign rice, which was sold for about N80,000 before, is now being sold for between N90,000 and N100,000.

Also, yams, which only a few weeks ago were sold for N5,000 per tuber, now go for N7,000 per tuber and N28,000 for a set of five.

A local measure of eight cups of beans now sells between N1,000 and N2,500, while a measure of garri, previously N1,300, was now being sold for between N1,400 and N1,500.

A carton of Indomie noodles previously sold at N7,500 has gone up to N7,700 while a basket of Irish potatoes, sold previously at between N5,000 and N5,500, now sells for N6,000 per basket.

Many residents are complaining that these food items are now completely beyond their reach.

Some traders said they had to increase the prices of food products due to the increase in the cost price at the depots and places where they purchased the items, as well as the cost of transporting the goods to Kaduna.

A trader, Monday Zango, who sells food items, said he does not sell eggs in bits anymore, stressing that he sells an entire crate at N6,000, as he may sell short if he sells single.

“The noodles and other goods l now buy I have to make gains somehow in order to take care of my family and be able to pay for the renting of the shop,” he explained.

Some people who spoke with DAILY POST lamented the present situation in the country, saying that insecurity and the hike of petrol have seriously affected the prices of foodstuffs and other necessities of life.

Suleiman Adamu stated, “Until we get a revolutionary leader that will have the political will to be able to address the present challenges facing the downtrodden in the country, things especially foodstuffs, will continue to go high, beyond the reach of the common man.

“We also need the people at the leadership level to fear God and do the needful for the entire country to be safe from the hands of those that care less of what people are going through.”

According to him, both Christians and Muslims would continue to experience similar hardship if urgent steps are not taken by those in authority to approach the problems head long.

He lamented, “Celebration by either Christians or Muslims is just a name because there is nothing for one to use to take care of the families. Nigerians are really suffering and there is nothing to pretend about it.”
