Nollywwod actor, Olu Jacobs dead at 82

After a prolonged struggle with dementia and other health issues, veteran Nollywood actor Olu Jacobs has reportedly passed away at the age of 82.

The news was confirmed by Nigerian media outlets on Sunday, June 30, 2024, prompting an outpouring of condolences from friends, colleagues, and sympathizers across social media platforms.

Mr Olu Jacobs, prior to his passing, was celebrated as a distinguished Nigerian actor and film executive, widely regarded as one of Africa’s finest actors of his generation.

In recent years, Mr. Olu Jacobs’ health has been in decline due to dementia, a condition impacting memory, cognition, and behaviour.

Throughout this period, his wife, actress Joke Silva, admirably served as his primary caregiver, openly sharing the difficulties of supporting him through his illness.

Despite his health struggles, the actor remained a cherished icon in the Nigerian film industry, known for his exceptional talent, unwavering commitment, and significant contributions to the advancement of Nollywood. His passing is mourned deeply by fans, colleagues, and his family.

Olu Jacobs initially launched his acting career in England, where he trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and featured in various British television productions during the 1970s.

Returning to Nigeria, he emerged as a prominent figure in Nollywood, starring in over 120 films and garnering numerous accolades, including the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007.
