House of Rep calls for probe into leaked citizens’ data

The House of Representatives has called for an investigation into phishing websites being used by unidentified individuals to harvest Nigerians’ data.

The lawmakers urged the Office of the National Security Adviser and other security agencies to “bring the perpetrators to justice”.

Spokesman of the House Akin Rotimi in a statement on Sunday condemned the unauthorised websites, which the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has warned the public to avoid.

It also expressed concern over the recent surge of scam messages and phishing activities as the handiwork of individuals with agendas that seek to cause distractions and undermine ongoing reforms within NIMC.

It identified several unauthorised websites, including http://idfinder.com.ng, http://Verify.Ng/signin, http://idfinder.com.ng, http://Verify.Ng/signin, ⁠http://championtech.com.ng, http://trustyonline.com, http://anyverify.com, and ⁠http://overify.kremtech.com.ng, which NIMC has warned the public to avoid.

The Chairman, House Committee on Population, Rep. Jimi Odimayo, expressed the House’s full support for NIMC’s efforts to protect the integrity of the National Identification Number (NIN) system and other sensitive data.

“We recognise the importance of robust data security measures as a cornerstone of our national security,” Odimayo said.

“The House stands firmly with NIMC in addressing these pressing issues and ensuring that our citizens’ data is protected from malicious actors.”
