Barely a week after 11 Nigerian girls trafficked to Ghana were rescued, two additional girls have been rescued by authorities in Ghana
This was revealed by the Chairman of the Nigerian Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa.
Dabiri-Erewa confirmed this on Tuesday, stating that the two rescued girls, whose names are withheld, hail from Lagos and Edo states.
She also disclosed that the rescue operation, facilitated by the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Ghana, led by Chairman, NIDO Board of Trustees (BoT), Chief Calistus, has resulted in the safe custody of the girls.
Dabiri-Erewa, however, reiterated her call for concerted efforts to combat human trafficking in all its ramifications, as it is another form of modern-day slavery.
She added that the rescued girls are giving useful information aimed at tracking down their traffickers, as they were deceived into into prostitution and that arrangements will be made to get them back to Nigeria and handed over to National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).
This recent rescue brings the total number of Nigerian girls rescued in Ghana to 13, following last week’s rescue of 11 girls from Imo and Plateau states who were also trafficked under false promises of employment as salesgirls but forced into prostitution.
