Hot SourceIn a bid to enhance journalist safety and strengthen media resilience in hostile environments, the Whistleblower Activist and Journalists Safety International Center (WAJSIC) partnered with Lazarus Training Ltd (UK) to deliver a four-day intensive capacity-building program in Accra.
The training, themed “Field Integrity and Resilience for Media Training,” ran from October 14–17, 2025 and brought together journalists, human rights defenders, and media practitioners from across Ghana’s shelters and advocacy networks.
The course focused on five essential pillars of field safety—Massive Bleed Control, Airway Management, Respiration and Circulation, Head Injury and Hypothermia Management, and Anti-Surveillance Techniques. Participants underwent both classroom sessions and hands-on field exercises designed to simulate real emergency conditions.
Facilitators A. Hollington and Chris from Lazarus Training delivered modules on pre-deployment planning, risk assessment, communication security, and personal protection. On the third day, participants practiced emergency medical responses, learning to stabilize casualties and manage trauma in unpredictable field situations.
Day Four concentrated on surveillance awareness, conflict management, and basic self-defense. Through role-playing and simulation exercises, journalists learned how to detect and avoid monitoring, manage confrontation, and protect themselves in volatile field assignments.
The program concluded with a review session and certificate presentation. Participants described the experience as “timely, practical, and empowering,” emphasizing how it built confidence to continue reporting from challenging contexts.
WAJSIC expressed gratitude to Lazarus Training Ltd and Ghana Integrity International for their support. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to advancing journalist safety, human rights, and freedom of expression through continuous training and international collaboration.
According to WAJSIC officials, the success of this program underscores the urgent need for sustained investments in media protection, trauma preparedness, and resilience training for frontline journalists and activists across the continent.
