Six dead, several injured in stampede at Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed the death of six potential recruits following a tragic stampede during the commencement of its 2025/2026 recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra on Wednesday, 12 November 2025.

In a statement signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations, GAF expressed deep regret over the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved families while wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

According to preliminary investigations, the stampede occurred around 6:20 a.m. after an unexpected surge of applicants breached security protocols and rushed through the gates ahead of the scheduled screening.

“The unfortunate incident led to the death of six potential recruits and many others injured. The injured are currently receiving emergency medical care at the 37 Military Hospital,” the statement read.

The Armed Forces assured the public that medical teams are working tirelessly to stabilise the affected individuals and that arrangements are underway to notify the families of the deceased.

“The Ghana Armed Forces extends its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes a swift recovery to those injured. Further updates will be communicated,” the statement concluded.

The GAF has urged the public to remain calm as it investigates the circumstances surrounding the incident and implements measures to prevent future occurrences.
