President Tinubu confirms death of Army Commander Musa Uba ambushed by ISWAP

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has officially confirmed the death of Brigadier General Musa Uba, the Army commander reported missing after an ambush by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants in Borno State. The announcement comes amid weeks of speculation, denials, and circulating social media footage regarding the general’s fate.

Through a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the senior officer and extended condolences to the families of Brigadier General Uba and other fallen soldiers.

“As the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, I am depressed by the tragic death of our soldiers and officers on active duty. May God comfort the families of Brigadier General Musa Uba and other fallen heroes,” the president said.

Sources revealed that General Uba, who commanded the 25th Task Force Brigade in Damboa, was on a routine patrol securing communities around Wajiroko in Azir Multe, Damboa LGA, when he encountered insurgents. The confrontation sparked fears about his safety, as conflicting reports and images circulated online.

The Nigerian Army had earlier denied claims of Uba’s abduction, stating that he was leading standard patrol operations in the area. However, President Tinubu’s confirmation confirms the loss and underscores the continued risks faced by Nigerian troops in the region.

Borno State remains a flashpoint in the ongoing security crisis, with frequent attacks by Boko Haram and ISWAP factions. Several local government areas are contested or under militant control, keeping residents on edge.

ISWAP, the dominant insurgent group in the Lake Chad region, is responsible for numerous high-profile attacks on military positions and civilians. Brigadier General Musa Uba played a critical role in ongoing counterinsurgency operations, and his death highlights both the bravery of Nigerian forces and the persistent threat posed by extremist groups in the northeast.

The loss of General Uba is a grim reminder of the challenges facing Nigeria’s military in its fight against insurgency and the high price of maintaining security in volatile regions.
