The Northern Regional Police Command, working with the IGP’s Special Operations Team, has arrested 27 suspects in a sweeping crackdown on drug peddling and related criminal activities across the Northern Region.
The arrests form part of a sustained nationwide operation to clamp down on narcotics distribution networks and other illicit activities, the police announced in a statement on Tuesday (25 November).
According to the statement, the suspects — including Iddrisu Abdul Bassit, Iddrisu Sadick, Yawuza Hishan, Yakubu Yussif, Alhassan Abukari, Mutaru Daniel Fisco, Ibrahim Abdul Wakil, Hawa Abdul Rahman, Latifa Iddrisu, Mariam Fuseini, Ibrahim Sadia, Alima Iddrisu, Issah Latifa and several others yet to be identified — were rounded up on 19 November during coordinated operations at multiple drug hotspots in and around Tamale.
Police recovered dried leaves believed to be cannabis, packaged in polythene bags, as well as five motorbikes suspected to have been used to facilitate drug distribution.
Further operations in other parts of the Tamale metropolis led to more arrests, bringing the total number of suspects to 27. All individuals have since been handed over to the Northern Regional Drug Law Enforcement Unit to assist with ongoing investigations.
Nine of the suspects — five females and four males — were arraigned before the Tamale Circuit Court on Friday (21 November) on charges of possessing narcotic drugs without lawful authority. Another suspect was charged with unlawful possession of arms and ammunition. All ten pleaded not guilty and were granted bail.
The remaining 18 suspects are in police custody assisting with investigations.
