A former Minister of State and governance expert, Akwasi Opong-Fosu, has cautioned against the misuse of social media to fuel ethnic divisions, warning that such practices threaten Ghana’s nation-building efforts.
He made the remarks during an engagement with the University of Ghana branch of the Asanteman Students Union, led by its president, Mr Otu Agyemang, who paid a courtesy call to honour his leadership and invite him to serve as a mentor to their student community.
Speaking on the theme “Escalation of Social Media Ethnic Division and Tensions – A Threat to Nation-Building,” Mr Opong-Fosu underscored the dangers of online ethnic rivalries and hate speech. He noted that while social media remains a powerful tool for education and mobilization, its misuse to spread misinformation and stereotypes has the potential to undermine national unity.
“The same fire that cooks our food can also burn down the house,” he said, quoting an Ashanti proverb to stress the double-edged nature of digital platforms. “Ethnic division is a poison, and social media has become its fastest carrier. But if used responsibly, it can also be the cure.”
Drawing from Ghana’s diverse cultural heritage, Opong-Fosu reminded the students that the nation’s strength lies in unity, likening Ghana to a kente cloth woven together from many colourful threads. He cautioned that “when social media is misused to promote ethnic rivalry, the threads of our national fabric begin to tear apart.”
He charged the youth, as the most active users of social media, to rise to the challenge by promoting positive narratives, challenging hate speech, and using their platforms to celebrate cultural diversity. “Before you post, ask yourself: does this message build bridges or burn them? Does it promote peace or provoke conflict?” he urged.
On their part, the Asanteman Students Union expressed admiration for Hon. Opong-Fosu’s dedication to public service and his longstanding advocacy for integrity and values in leadership. Their President, Mr. Otu Agyemang, conveyed the Union’s desire to tap into his experience and wisdom as a mentor for the next generation of leaders.
Hon. Opong-Fosu accepted the invitation and charged the group to lead in efforts to de-escalate ethnic tensions through cross-cultural initiatives.
“I am truly honoured by this call. The passion and determination of our young people inspire hope for Ghana’s future. Together, we must nurture a generation of leaders grounded in values, integrity, and service to humanity. I look forward to walking this journey with you,” he said.
The event ended with a renewed call for collaboration between seasoned leaders and young people in charting a path for national cohesion and sustainable development.
