Hot SourceThe National Sports Authority (NSA) has placed an immediate suspension on all boxing bouts across Ghana in the wake of the death of Ghanaian fighter Ernest Akushey, widely known in the ring as “Bahubali.”
Akushey passed away early Tuesday, 11 days after his bruising clash with Jacob Dickson at the Bukom Boxing Arena on 12 September, a contest that ended in an eighth-round stoppage. Medical reports point to internal bleeding as the cause of death.
The NSA confirmed that a formal investigation is under way to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
“It reflects the joint commitment of the NSA and the Sports Ministry to prioritize the safety, health and welfare of athletes,” the Authority stated in a release.
It added: “The NSA and the Sports Ministry therefore calls on all stakeholders – promoters, coaches, officials, athletes, supporters and the media – to fully respect this directive.”
Bahubali’s death marks the second fatal incident to rock Ghanaian boxing this year, following the passing of Gabriel Aluwasegun in April.
The suspension, officials say, will remain until a comprehensive review of safety standards in the sport is completed.
